thanks, but can they reasonably be expected to do this? How many members need the

abstracts? Is it sufficient to try to ensure a variety of articles in all three languages? Almost

all this issue is in English. This is not because the Editor is English, but because the articles

were submitted in that language. Very few contributors were English speaking. As an

experiment the next issues will have the articles as they are submitted by the authors with

any abstracts provided at source. Obviously some authors expect to do this as some articles

arrive in English with abstracts in French and German provided. Is this an unreasonable

request? Please complain if this is not to your liking. Also please complain if other things about

Fontes are not to your liking. If you have views please write. Fontes needs a correspondence column. Particularly it needs to be a channel of communication for those members unable to

attend international conferences. Otherwise many members play no part at all in the life of

the Association and that is a pity.

Items of any category can of course be submitted at any time, the earlier the better. These

are the latest dates beyond which they will not be considered for the particular issue. It is the

intention to keep to the same deadlines for each year, but they will be published in each issue

and attention will be drawn to any change.

De la Présidente Il est quelque peu déconcertant d'écrire sur les affaires courantes en avril, quand je sais

que mes commentaires ne seront pas lus avant septembre au moins, bien après la rencontre

d'Amsterdam où j'aurai eu l'occasion de parler avec plusieurs d'entre vous. Mais ceux pour

qui cette revue est la seule source d'information sur l'AIBM s'intéresseront peut-être à ces

quelques remarques sur ce qui retient l'attention du Bureau entre les réunions annuelles. Nous avons eu pendant l'année passée plusieurs sujets d'inquiétude, le principal étant le

statut de La musique dans la vie de l'homme - une histoire mondiale (MLM). Le Président du Conseil International de la Musique se posait des problèmes sur la validité et les

possibilités de réalisation du projet et retenait les fonds correspondants. MLM, qui a été

décrit dans Fontes', a été entièrement soutenu par l'AIBM. En votre nom j'ai fermement

protesté, comme l'ont fait plusieurs autres organisations membres du CIM, et heureusement le problème semble avoir été résolu.

Parmi les autres questions d'administration courante et de planification qui nous ont

occupés, mentionnons les lieux où se tiendront nos prochaines réunions, nos liens avec

l'Association internationale des archives sonores et le rôle particulier des centres d'informa tion musicale. Nous tentons également de résoudre le tiraillement qui existe entre les besoins nationaux et les programmes internationaux sans taxer la bonne volonté ni les

budgets de fonctionnement de l'un ou l'autre. Ce qui me préoccupe particulièrment,

toutefois, c'est une tendance à la sur-programmation et à l'inévitable éparpillement en de

multiples activités qui semble se manifester. Il y a toujours eu un certain degré de

spécialisation chez nos membres, mais lorsqu' une de nos sections professionnelles prévoit

plus d'une ou deux séances pendant la réunion annuelle, il y a danger que ses membres

s'isolent du programme d'ensemble des travaux de l'association. Nous devons garder à

l'esprit qu'il y a des intérêts et travaux communs à tous les groupes professionnels et que les

discussions en ateliers seraient plus enrichissantes et utiles si elles réunissaient une plus

grande diversité de membres.

En terminant, j'aimerais féliciter l'une de nos distinguées collègues qui a mené à bien une

autre entreprise d'envergure. Avec son Periodica Musicalia (1789-1830)2, Mme Imogen

Fellinger nous offre un bel exemple de dévouement sans faille accordé à la documentation

bibliographique. Elle a droit à toute notre admiration et à notre reconnaissance.

Von der Präsidentin Es ist etwas verwirrend für mich, Ihnen im April einen kurzen Zwischenbericht über den

Stand einiger Dinge zu geben und zugleich zu wissen, daß Sie ihn frühestens im September

lesen werden, lange nachdem ich einige von Ihnen vielleicht in Amsterdam gesehen habe.

Aber für jene, die ihre Informationen über IVMB hauptsächlich unserer Zeitschrift

entnehmen, dürften einige Bemerkungen über Angelegenheiten, die den Vorstand zwischen

den jährlichen Treffen beschäftigen, von Interesse sein.

Im vergangenen Jahr gab es einige unangenehme Entwicklungen, von denen die

wichtigste die Situation von Music in the Life of Man - a World History (MLM) betraf. Der Präsident des Internationalen Musikrats (IMR) hatte die Berechtigung und Durchführbar

keit des Projekts in Frage gestellt und die Gelder zurückgehalten. MLM wurde in Fontes1

beschrieben und von der IVMB voll unterstützt. In unser aller Namen habe ich energisch

protestiert, so wie es auch andere internationale Organisationen des IMR getan haben.

Glücklicherweise scheint das Problem inzwischen gelöst worden zu sein.

Andere Dinge betrafen mehr Verwaltung und Planung innerhalb der IVMB, etwa den Ort

zukünftiger Treffen, unsere Beziehung zur IASA sowie die besondere Rolle der Musikinfor

mationszentren. Auch waren wie bemüht, den Konflikt zwischen den nationalen Bedürfnis

sen und den internationalen Programmen beizulegen, ohne weder den guten Willen noch

die Etats der einzelnen Gruppen und unserer Organisation zu gefährden. Mich persönlich

bewegt vor allem auch die Tendenz zur Überprogrammierung und unvermeidlichen

Zersplitterung der Aktivitäten innerhalb unserer Organisation. Es gab zwar immer einen

gewissen Grad an Spezialisierung. Doch wenn jede Fachgruppe für das Jahrestreffen mehr

als zwei Sitzungen plant, besteht die Gefahr, daß ihre Mitglieder von den allgemeinen

Arbeitsprogrammen der Vereinigung isoliert werden. Wir müssen daran denken, daß viele

Interessen und Aufgaben allen Fachgruppen gemeinsam sind, und daß die Ergebnisse der

Diskussionen innerhalb der Arbeitsgruppen umso ergiebiger und nützlicher sind je

mannigfaltiger die Zusammensetzung ihrer Teilnehmer ist.
