CETTE année encore, pour la quatrième édition du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe l’excellence sera de mise. Le Qatar Prix de l’Arc

de Triomphe est considéré comme le championnat du monde des pur-sang en terme de rating et prestige et focalisera toute l’attention du monde hippique et des médias.

Fort des ces quatre années de succès, le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe va connaître un nouvel essor grâce à l’augmentation de son allocation dès 2013.

Le Qatar a fait du sport un de ses axes forts de notoriété et d’image. Le partenariat du Qatar et de cette course mythique en est un exemple parfait.

Le pur-sang arabe a joué un role essentiel dans le développement de la péninsule arabique. Il appartient depuis toujours à notre mémoire culturelle

collective. Nous avons, donc tenu, cette année, à revaloriser les courses pur-sang arabes en augmentant les allocations de la Qatar Arabian World Cup et du Qatar Arabian Trophy des juments, confirmant ainsi notre soutien à la filière des pur-sang arabes.

FOR the fourth edition of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe the emphasis will once again be on excellence. The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is regarded

as the thoroughbred World Championship in terms of ratings and prestige. It attracts the attention of the global horse racing community and the international media.

Buoyed by its four years of success, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is going to enjoy a significant boost to its prize money purse from 2012 onwards. Through the medium of sport Qatar has developed its fame and image worldwide. The partnership between Qatar and this world renowned horse race is a perfect example of that.

The pure-bred Arabian has played a pivotal role in the development of the Arab peninsula. It has forever been a part of our collective cultural history. Therefore, this

year we have increased the value of the Arab pure blood races by increasing the prize money of the Qatar Arabian World Cup and the Qatar Arabian Trophy for fillies. This move underlines our support of Arab pure bloods.

LE Président de France Galop a connu une satisfaction hippique exceptionnelle en cette année 2011 : le succès de Méandre, sous les couleurs «famille Rothschild »,

casaque jaune toque bleue, dans le groupe I Grand Prix de Paris, disputé le jour de la Fête Nationale de surcroît. Un succès d’autant plus apprécié qu’il n’y croyait pas vraiment, même si un propriétaire espère toujours au moins un peu.

« Même s’il avait accompli un petit exploit dans le Prix de l’Avre, il ne paraissait pas raisonnable d’espérer devancer Reliable Man, gagnant du Jockey-Club, ni Séville, favori de la coalition O’Brien dans le Derby d’Epsom. »

C’est pourtant ce que le poulain a fait, et avec quel brio, en quelques foulées, remportant le plus beau succès Rothschild depuis le Prix du

Jockey-Club de Crystal Palace à la fin des années soixante-dix.

Edouard de Rothschild est de loin le plus jeune président qu’ait connu l’institution du galop. Cela s’est un peu fait sentir dans sa gestion des affaires, y compris dans ses activités de loisir, car si d’aucuns se sont étonnés de ne pas le voir plus souvent aux courses, c’est parce qu’il est si près du cheval qu’il pratique activement le concours hippique à ses rares heures de loisir.

« Il est encore un peu tôt pour juger de l’opportunité d’avoir écourté le Prix du Jockey-Club, mais les premiers résultats semblent plutôt encourageants. Bien sûr il y a eu et il y aura de grandes et de faibles années, comme il y en a eu du temps des 2400 mètres. La progression qui amenait les poulains à la distance dite classique début juin était peut-être un peu brutale. On avait

THE France Galop President has enjoyed an exceptional year on the racecourse in 2011, with Meandre sporting the famous yellow and blue Rothschild family silks,

lifting the Grand Prix de Paris on France’s national holiday, July 14. A victory that was all the more appreciated as it was unexpected, not withstanding that owners always like to dream of the best outcome.

“Even if he did well in the Prix de l’Avre it didn’t seem reasonable to believe he could finish in front of Reliable Man, the winner of the Jockey Club; or Seville, the O’Brien team’s favourite in the Epsom Derby,” said Rothschild.

But that’s precisely what the colt did – and in fine style, in just a matter of strides, delivering

the greatest Rothschild success since Crystal Palace in the Prix du Jockey-Club in the late 1970s.

Edouard de Rothschild is by far and away the youngest President in the history of French racing, and this is evident not only in the way he approaches business but also in his leisure pursuits. He is an accomplished horseman and in his rare time off he likes to take part in equestrian competitions.

On the subject of reducing the distance of the French Derby he says: “It’s too early to judge but the initial results appear generally encouraging. Certainly, there have been, and there always will be, years that are stronger or weaker, just as there were when it was run over 2400m.

Votre présidence sera sans doute marquée aussi par les décisions concernant Longchamp.

« Au cours des années soixante, un tour de force technique a permis de détruire les tribunes en bois et de les remplacer par celles qui existent sans perdre une journée de course. Les tribunes furent mises en chantier dans ce qui est aujourd’hui le parking du comité dès 1962, et les tribunes en bois détruites après l’Arc de Sea Bird. Une fin glorieuse, en somme ! Pendant l’hiver, on a fait riper les bâtiments sur rails, et les courses ont repris dès avril 1966.

Aujourd’hui, ces tribunes ont près d’un demi-siècle, ne sont plus aux normes, et commencent même à se détériorer par endroit. »

Il y a polémique entre les partisans d’une réfection poussée et ceux d’une reconstruction.

En finale, le rafistolage est souvent plus coûteux que le neuf. Il ne faut pas perdre de vue que Longchamp est la grande vitrine du galop français qui doit pouvoir accueillir une fois par an un week-end durant le fin du fin du monde hippique international et aussi la grande foule. Nous avons fait un appel d’offre auprès de sept cabinets d’architecture très importants qui connaissent les diverses autres contraintes, tout au long de l’année. Les adversaires de frais élevés opposent, entre autres, le fait que nous sommes locataires. En fait, après a voir eu beaucoup de mal à sauver Auteuil, lieu mythique des courses d’obstacles, je suis sur le point de signer un bail raisonnable

de 50 à 99 ans pour l’ensemble de nos deux hippodromes du bois de Boulogne, il n’y a donc pas de problème de ce côté là.

Jadis délicates, les relations trot-galop semblent sereines.

Jean-Luc Lagardère avait amorcé ce rapprochement avec Paul Essartial. Pour ma part, j’ai établi avec Dominique de Bellaigue un partenariat solide, équitable et respecté. Cette forme de gouvernance bicéphale des courses est la clé des réussites futures. Il est évident que le partenariat en question ne peut être efficace qu’en symbiose avec le PMU, à la tête duquel Philippe Germont est un président remarquable.. Je m’attache à maintenir l’équilibre au sein de ce G3 des courses, qui a plus été nommé ainsi par semi

dérision de la politique que par conviction d’être un mini G 8 ou G 20.

L’ouverture des jeux en ligne, boum ou flop?

Sans doute ni l‘un ni l’autre en général, plutôt flop en ce qui concerne les courses. Les opérateurs licenciés n’offrent pas d’avantage à notre clientèle qui a tendance à nous rester fidèle, c’est plus facile, car les jeux les plus populaires ne sont pas possibles chez les opérateurs nouveaux qui manquent de contre-partie et ne peuvent pas, pour l’instant les organiser.

distance at the beginning of June was a little abrupt. We used to have at the end of June a long distance Grand Prix de Paris, but it wasn’t working and breeders, for right or for wrong, were neglecting stallions displaying plenty of stamina. So we arrived at this paradox of a Grand Prix de Paris staged over 300m less than the Prix du Jockey Club.” Your presidency will no doubt be marked by the decisions involving Longchamp?

“In the 1960s a technical tour de force enabled the replacement of the wooden stands with the existing ones without the loss of a single day’s racing. The stands were built in what is now the committee’s car park and the wooden stands were destroyed after Sea Bird’s Arc, a glorious end!

“During the winter, the stands were moved on rails and racing resumed in April 1966. Today those stands are almost half a century old. They are out of date and in some places, showing signs of wear and tear.” Is there still controversy over the merits of the renovation or reconstruction.

“Repairing something can often work out more expensive than starting afresh. We can’t lose sight of the fact that Longchamp is the showcase of French racing and it has to play host one weekend a year to the very best of international racing and also accommodate an enormous crowd.

“We have consulted seven renowned architectural firms over the course of the year and they are aware of the various constraints.

“Those who are against paying a high price among other things don’t like the fact that we are tenants. In fact, after having difficulty in saving Auteuil, the magnificent jumping course, I am on the verge of signing a reasonable contract of 50 to 99 years for both racecourses in the Bois de Boulogne. So there isn’t a problem in this area. Formerly delicate, relations between racing and trotting appear to be calm.

“Jean-Luc Lagardère began this rapport with Paul Essartial. On my side, I established a

solid, balanced and respectful partnership with Dominique de Bellaigue. This twin governance of racing is key to its future success. It’s clear the existing partnership can only work in harmony with the PMU, at the head of which Philippe Germond is a superb President. I am committed to maintaining the balance of this ‘G3’ of racing, which got its name more in semi-jest rather than any idea of it being a mini G8 or G20.” The opening up of betting online – is it a hit or a miss?

“Without doubt neither one nor the other, overall, but it’s more of a miss where racing is concerned. The licensed operators don’t offer more to our clients who have shown a tendency to remain loyal; it’s easier, as the most popular bets aren’t available with the new operators who are missing the means of providing them and, for the time being, cannot seem organise them. Your final aim?

Agé de 56 ans, Hubert Monzat a montré une grande aptitude d’adaptation quand il est passé d’un métier à un autre au cours d’une carrière déjà très remplie avant d’entrer à France Galop en tant que Directeur Général.

Diplômé de l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, titulaire d’une maîtrise de droit et diplômé de l’ENA en 1982, il devient conseiller financier de la Direction des Affaires Internationales de la Délégation Générale pour l’Armement au Ministère de la Défense. Deux ans plus tard, il rejoint le Ministère de l’Economie comme responsable à la CEE des Relations Economiques Extérieures.

Affecté en 1986 à la Direction de l’Aviation Civile, puis en 1988 au Ministère de l’Intérieur où il intègre le corps préfectoral.

De 1995 à 1998, il est Directeur Général des services au Conseil Général du Languedoc-Roussillon, puis retrouve le service de l’Etat

à Senlis. La proximité de Chantilly le ramène vers le pur-sang qu’il a tant aimé quand il montait comme gentleman-rider à Maisons-Laffitte. Il fait alors connaissance d’Eric Woerth, Maire de Chantilly, et de l’Aga Khan, lesquels convainquent Pierre Messmer, Chancelier de l’Institut de France, propriétaire du domaine des Condés, de créer une fondation d’utilité publique associant partenaires publics et privés, ayant pour mission de gérer l’ensemble du domaine, hippodrome compris. Hubert Monzat sera une des chevilles ouvrières de la création de cette fondation, avant de rejoindre Eric Woerth en qualité de conseiller spécial auprès du Ministre du Budget en 2007. Il sera notamment chargé de la négociation avec Bruxelles des modalités d’ouverture du marché des jeux en ligne puis de la rédaction du projet de loi la réglementant, jusqu’à sa nomination à la direction générale de France Galop en juillet 2008.

Voilà à peine plus de trois ans qu’Hubert Monzat a été nommé Directeur Général de France Galop. A l’époque, il s’était déclaré ravi de travailler dans et

pour un monde qui l’avait toujours passionné, mais il pensait que succéder à Louis Romanet ne serait pas une sinécure.

Il avait raison. De sinécure, il n’y eut pas. Il y eut d’autant moins que deux événements d’importance, l’un prévu, l’autre imprévu allaient marquer ces trois années : Le prévu, c’était l’ouverture des jeux, et cela s’est plutôt bien passé, l’imprévu, c’est une des plus graves crises mondiales, encore en cours d’ailleurs, même si en accalmie.

« Les paris hippiques ont bien progressé au cours des huit dernières années en France, note Hubert Monzat. Sur cette période, + 30%, alors que l’inflation n’a été que de 11%. Dans la même période au Japon, par exemple, où le fonctionnement des prises de paris ressemble beaucoup au nôtre, les ressources de la Japon Racing Association baissent année après année. »

D’où vient-il alors que de nombreux professionnels et petits ou moyens propriétaires pleurent misère ?

Des exemples trompeurs de réussite exceptionnelle ont laissé croire que le propriétariat doit être rentable. C’est faux. Il peut l’être, mais il ne doit pas l’être. Les Anglais sont heureux de posséder dix pour cent, voire moins, d’un bon cheval, il faut que nous encouragions la création d’écuries de groupe plus nombreuses permettant de tenir le choc.

Etre propriétaire doit être considéré comme un plaisir de luxe que l’écurie de groupe permet d’aborder »

Le problème des professionnels est plus délicat. On admet bien que l’accession à certaines grandes professions (médecins, professeurs..) soit limitée par des quotas révisés chaque année.

Hubert Monzat – a wideand varied career

Hubert Monzat, aged 56, has displayed a marked ability to adapt whenever he has moved from one position to another in a career that was already extremely developed before he arrived at France Galop as it’s Director General.

A graduate of the Institution d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, holder of a law degree and a graduate from the ENA in 1982 he became a financial adviser at the Ministry of Defence. Two years later he joined the Finance Ministry where he was responsible for overseas economic relations at the EU.

In 1986 he moved to the Civil Aviation department then in 1988 to the Interior Ministry.

From 1995 to 1998 he was Director General for the Languedoc Rossillon department before moving again to the State office in Senlis. Living

close to Chantilly brought him into the world of the thoroughbred, a world that he already knew from his time as an amateur rider at Maisons-Laffite. He became acquainted with Eric Woerth, the Mayor of Chantilly at that time, and the Aga Khan, and they convinced Pierre Messmer, Chancellor of the Institut de France, the owners of Chantilly racecourse, to establish a public and privately-backed foundation to run the racecourse and gallops. Hubert Monzat was one of the driving forces behind the setting up of this foundation.

He then joined Eric Woerth as adviser at the Budget Ministry in 2007 where he was notably involved in negotiations with Brussels on the opening up of online betting, then on the legal mechanism to get this going, up to his nomination as Director General of France Galop in 2008.

Peut-être devra-t-on en venir là pour l’attribution de nouvelles licences. C’est triste d’en être réduit à cela, mais s’il le faut pour sauver l’institution »…

Vous voilà tout d’un coup moins optimiste…C’est quand rien ne va vraiment mal qu’il faut

songer à ce qui pourrait mal tourner.

Hubert Monzat was appointed France Galop’s Director General a little over three years ago. At the time he declared himself delighted to be suddenly working

in and for a world for which he had always held a passion.

But he knew that succeeding someone like Louis Romanet meant he would be stepping into a position with plenty of responsibility.

He was right. It certainly was no cakewalk. Two events, one planned, the other unplanned, were to mark his first three years in office.

The planned event was the opening up of betting, and that’s gone more or less smoothly. The unexpected was one of the worst global financial crises, one that is still continuing even if it has calmed down a little.

“Betting on racing has progressed well over the past eight years in France,” says Hubert Monzat. “It’s more than 30 per cent up during this time, whilst inflation was only 11 per cent.

“During the same period in Japan, for example, where the system of betting greatly resembles our own model, the Japan Racing Association’s revenues have fallen year after year.”

Why then are so many professionals and so many small or medium sized owners complaining about these difficult times?

“Misleading examples of exceptional success have left the impression that being an owner must be profitable. That’s false. It can be the case, but it’s not a given right. In England, for instance, owners are happy to own perhaps ten per cent or even much less of a good racehorse.

“We should encourage the setting up of large owners’ syndicates to enable them to compensate for these hard times, and share the burden. Being a racehorse owner should be considered a pleasure which a syndicate can help you attain

“The problem with professionals is more delicate. To get into certain professions like doctors or teachers there are quotas which are revised each year. Perhaps that’s something we should be looking at with the handing out of new licences. It’s sad to be reduced to that but if it’s needed to save racing then it has to be considered.”

Comme on est à l’apogée de la saison des pur-sang anglais et arabes ce week-end du 2 octobre à Longchamp, avec le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe et la Qatar

Arabian World Cup, jetons un coup d’œil à la suite de la saison du QREC à Doha.

La saison 2011/2012 commencera le 20 octobre sur le champ de courses Al Rayyan et s’achèvera le 17 mai 2012. Cinquante trois réunions sont programmées, comportant des innovations.

La plus importante est l’apparition de dix-huit réunions sur le sable.

La saison précédente, Il y eut quarante-trois réunions dont deux seulement sur la piste d’entraînement en sable de Doha, à titre de

test, pour juger de l’opportunité d’étendre le programme sable. L’essai a été concluant et a permis au QREC d’envisager une extension au delà de cinquante de ses réunions de course

En effet, le climat du Qatar ne permet pas d’envisager un nombre élevé de courses sur le gazon, faute de pluie. Ainsi, on va ramener de quarante et une à trente-cinq les réunions sur gazon qui se dérouleront dans de meilleures conditions.

L’effort fait pour apporter de la variété au programme des courses principales, comprend plusieurs mesures, dont l’augmentation du nombre de courses principales et la jonction des réunions du festival international et HH the Emirs Trophies & Sword pour créer ainsi un festival de trois jours.

Simultanément, on a augmenté les championnats pour « trois ans » pour les pouliches comme pour les poulains. Les pouliches ont été très soignées avec des Oaks et leurs préparatoires pour les pur-sang anglais et arabes !

Idem chez les poulains, dont les deux races pures ont désormais Guinées, Derby « trials » et Derby !

La programmation des courses a été adaptée aux variations de la population chevaline. Pour cette saison, il y a autant de pur-sang anglais qu’arabes. Les 53 réunions de courses sont divisées également en 343 courses dont 228 sur le gazon et 115 sur le sable. Des changements ont aussi été apportés au « ratings », à savoir sept valeurs pour les anglais et quatre pour les arabes.

Pour les pur-sang anglais, seuls les 85+ seront admis dans les courses principales. Les remises de poids dans les courses ordinaires se feront désormais en fonction du rating et non plus en fonction du nombre de succès.

L’arrivée des courses sur le sable a obligé à repositionner les tours porteuses des caméras, de façon qu’elles puissent filmer aussi bien le gazon que le sable, ce qui permettra aussi un contrôle vidéo des courses amélioré pour les commissaires.

On a aussi bien amélioré les facilités sur l’hippodrome pour les chevaux : la piscine couverte, le presque terminé second hôpital vétérinaire. Les aires de marche pour les chevaux ont été agrandies, avec des rembourrages de sécurité renforcés.

La construction du clubhouse est achevée, celle de l’hôtel aussi. Quand la finition de l’intérieur sera là, il sera accessible à tous. Hôtel, restaurant, cinéma, centre sportif avec piscine, tennis club, terrain de

basket. Le dernier code du Qrec date de 2004. Il a dû être complètement revu, modernisé et sera publié en arabe et en anglais. Il sera disponible pour tous avant le début de la saison 2011/2012. Les instructions pour la nouvelle saison seront revues de façon à respecter les changements du nouveau code.

Dans l’intérêt de tous les cavaliers, le Racing Club a scellé un nouvel arrangement avec le groupe londonien JLT, lui-même réassuré chez Lloyds of London. L‘assurance est complète pour tous les cavaliers des terrains d’entraînements, des jockeys et des jockeys venus de l’étranger.

La nouvelle saison sera, une fois encore, une démonstration du développement des courses au Qatar. De récents achats montrent la confiance des propriétaires dans les courses quatariennes, et devraient poursuivre les succès des achats d’années passées, qui ont compris des gagnants au niveau groupe I européen. QREC introduces new innovations and expands racing season to 53 meetings

AS we celebrate the climax of the European Thoroughbred Racing Season with the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp and the Grand Final of Purebred

Arabian racing with the Qatar Arabian World Cup on Arc Day, we can look forward to the start of the new Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club season in Doha later this month.

The 2011/12 Racing Season is scheduled to commence on Thursday 20th October 2011 at the magnificent Al Rayyan Racecourse. The season will encompass 53 Race Meetings and will conclude on Thursday 17th May 2012. In programming for these 53 Race Meetings numerous innovations have been introduced.

The most obvious change is the introduction of

a sand track programme, with 18 Race Meetings being conducted on sand. For some time now, the Management of the QREC has wished to expand the Racing Season.

For the 2010/11 Racing Season there was a total of 43 Race Meetings, of which only two were run on the Sand Training Track at Doha, as an experiment to gauge the suitability for bringing in a substantial Sand Programme for the coming season. Following the success of these two Sand Meetings it was agreed that Sand Racing would be viable and provide competitive racing on the existing Sand Training Track.

This decision has enabled the QREC to extend the Racing Season beyond 50 Race Meetings. It was felt that with the climatic conditions in Qatar the Turf Track could not adequately cope with

the strain of accommodating 50 or more Race Meetings. Also with the decrease in the number of Turf Meetings from 41 to 35 a good racing surface will be available for all Turf Meetings.

In its endeavour to provide a greater variety to the feature Race Programme, various measures were introduced, including the addition of new feature races and the combining of the Race Meetings of the International Racing Festival and H.H. The Emir’s Trophies & Sword Festival to become a three-day carnival.

Accordingly, the Three Year Old Championships were increased and expanded to provide for both fillies and colts. The fillies have been catered for with the addition of the Oaks Trial and the Oaks for both thoroughbreds and Arabians.

Le lot de juments d’ Al Shahania passe pour beaucoup de specialiste comme un des meilleurs sinon le meilleur du monde. Parmi ces juments si convoitées, le Cheik Mohammed cite sans hésiter Akie Croix Noire comme la meilleure. Gagnante en France, en Angleterre et au Moyen Orient, elle a produit neuf foals excellents.

Sa fille Arc de Ciel, par Djendel, est peut-être la jument la mieux née, sans doute prête à bientôt rivaliser avec sa mère comme reproductrice. Le haras a aussi élevé des pur-sang anglais, aujourd’hui âgés de deux ans, et à l’entraînement en Europe. L’un d’eux termina second d’une listed race lors de ses débuts.

Le Cheik a également un élevage de chevaux arabes compétiteurs de concours de beauté et d’élégance. La première fois qu’il présenta des candidats aux US, sa pouliche de trois ans Abha Qalams (Alfabia Damascus et Abha Mudira) obtint le titre de US National Champion jument junior !

Le Scottsdale Show de 2011 apporta plus de gloire à Al Shahania quand le merveilleux alezan Barzan Al Shahania (Stival et NW Siena Psyche) remporta le Champion Arabian Junior Colt, avant d’obtenir deux mois plus tard à l’unanimité le titre de Supreme Champion Yearling Colt à Las Vegas World Cup Show. Egalement à Scottsdale, la jolie poulinière baie Abha Raipur (El Perfecto et Abha Zenobia) remporta le Champion Breeders International Classic Senior Mare, tandis que A-Malaysia (A Jakarta et Estee Lauder) remportait le même titre en junior filly.

SITUATED in Qatar’s greenbelt, the Arabians of Al Shahania Stud enjoy themselves in the irrigated pastures in the shade of the date palms. The beautifully designed barns and grounds

make this a showplace, befitting the elite of the Arabian racing and showing world.

In the late 1980s when Qatar began to hold organised Arabian race meetings, owner H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani purchased the stallion Djendel (Manganate x Mandore), one of the first French-bred Arabians to come to the Middle East. In the years since, Sheikh Mohammed has created a first-class breeding programme. One of the current stars is Jaafer (Amer x Madjela), whose thrilling win in the $250,000 Kahayla Classic, the first event on the card at last year’s Dubai World Cup Day, was a milestone for Al Shahania Stud.

Four months later in the Group 1 Shadwell Dubai International Stakes for Purebred Arabians at Newbury racecourse in the UK, Jaafer cruised to victory. It was the highlight of the final day of the Dubai Summer Festival. This year, Jaafer won Qatar’s biggest Arabian race, the eighth Emir’s Sword, becoming the fourth Emir’s Sword winner bred by Al Shahania.

The Al Shahania Arabian racing broodmares are considered by many to be among the best in the world for racing and breeding. Sheikh Mohammed regards Akie Croix Noire as his best – a race winner in France and the UK as well as the Middle East, who has produced nine excellent foals. Sheikh Mohammed believes that her daughter, Arc de Ciel, by Djendel is the best bred mare and may soon rival her dam as the best producer. Al Shahania also has two-year old Thoroughbreds in training in Europe, and one was second in a listed race, first time out.

The 2011 Scottsdale Show brought more glory to Al Shahania when the gorgeous chestnut colt Barzan Al Shahania (Stival x NW Siena Psyche) won Champion Arabian Classic Junior Colt. Two months later, Barzan was crowned the Supreme Champion Yearling Colt at the Las Vegas World Cup Show. Also at Scottsdale, the farm’s pretty bay mare, Abha Raipur (El Perfecto x Abha Zenobia) won the Champion Breeders International Classic Senior Mare, while the filly A-Malaysia (A Jakarta x Estee Lauder) won the Champion Breeders International Classic Junior Filly.

Sheikh Mohammed looks forward to cheering on Al Shahania’s horses whether they’re competing at the world’s most prestigious racetracks or in the showring. “Competition is what drives us to be excellent,” he says. “Our goal is to breed our own winners – this is the pursuit that brings me the most pleasure and pride.”

have been expanded to include the Guineas, Derby Trial and Derbys for both thoroughbreds and Purebred Arabians.

The format for programming races has been altered to reflect the change in the composition of the make-up of the horse populations. For this season the ratio of thoroughbred races and Arabian races is evenly divided. In all, the 53 Race Meetings are scheduled to comprise 343 Races with 228 on Turf and 115 on Sand.

There have also been extensive changes to the Rating Bands used to programme races, with seven rating ranges for thoroughbreds and four for Arabians.

In relation to thoroughbreds, most feature races will be restricted to horses rated 85+. The conditions for Stakes Races has also been amended with weights allocated according to Ratings, replacing weights allocated according to the number of wins.

The Introduction of Sand Racing has necessitated the re-positioning of the various camera towers, so as to provide good video reproduction with the same video towers being used to film races on both the Turf and the Sand Tracks.

At the same time, this will provide head-on video replays for most sections of the tracks. This, combined with the new Stewards’ Patrol System, will make the policing of the industry much fairer.

Recent developments to on course facilities include the opening of the Indoor Horse Swimming Pool, and the-soon-to-be opened second Veterinary Hospital. At the same time, the Horse Walking areas have been upgraded to provide more comfort for the horses and greater safety with increased padding.

The construction of the Members Clubhouse and Hotel has been completed. Once the interior décor and fitting is finalised it will be made available to all. Facilities include hotel accommodation, restaurants, cinema, convention centre and sporting facilities which include swimming, tennis and basketball.

The QREC Rule Book which was last re-printed in 2004 has been completely revamped and will be printed in both Arabic and English and made available to all sections of the industry before the commencement of the new Racing Season. Accordingly, the Instructions for the 2011/12 Racing Season will be amended to reflect changes to the Rule Book.

To safeguard the interest of all riders the Racing Club has entered into a new Insurance arrangement with The JLT Group, London, who are insured through Lloyds of London. The new arrangement provides complete Insurance requirements for all track work riders, local

jockeys and visiting expatriate riders. The New Racing Season will again

demonstrate the development of racing in Qatar. Recent purchases also demonstrate the confidence of the Owners in Qatar Racing and these purchases should continue the successes of last year’s purchases which included numerous European Group 1 winners.

IN last year’s magazine, I spoke about the “Dream Team” agreement signed between France Galop and Qatar to sponsor the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and other Group races, until 2022.

After only twelve months since then, so much has been achieved by Qatar to increase its presence within the sporting world all around Europe.

In the UK, QIPCO Holdings signed a “multi-million pound” sponsorship deal with horseracing’s 35-event British Champions Series. Under the two-year agreement, QIPCO (Qatar International Projects) will have exclusive naming rights for the Series and a full partnership in the new British Champions Day at Ascot on October 15.

With total prize money of £3million it will be the richest event in British racing history. QIPCO will be the official partner of next year’s Guineas Festival at the end of April, and the Sussex Stakes during the Glorious Goodwood Festival in July.

Pearl Bloodstock, QIPCO’s racing operation, has invested heavily in purchasing top class mares for their stallion MAKFI and their top class racehorses including FREDERIC ENGELS (winner of the Group 2 July Stakes), HARBOUR WATCH ( Gr 2 Richmond Stakes)

and SIDE GLANCE (Gr 3 Sovereign Stakes). All around Europe, and mainly in France and the

UK, the QREC sponsors Arabian races, and in Qatar the number of races has been increased to include not only races on grass but also on dirt. There are more and more races for thoroughbred horses at the beautiful AL Rayan Racecourse in Doha, where more than 400 new stables have been built recently.

I am proud to have had a close association with this QREC project over the past eight years, in supervising the construction of the racing and training tracks, the grandstand, the stables, one of the clubhouses (with swimming pool, bar, restaurant and various amenities) the administration building, veterinary clinic and other areas, as well as the Equestrian Federation facilities with its indoor and outdoor arenas, new stables and facilities that were used for the Asian Games 2008.

Al Rayan has some of the finest and most beautiful racing and training facilities in the Gulf, which compare favourably with the best in the world.

The QREC was the first racing club of the Gulf countries to organise amateur races for lady jockeys and we were very proud to see the Qatar-based rider, Kadija, winning one of the Ladies Jockeys Challenge

races against the top amateur lady jockeys who came to Qatar from 10 different countries for the Racing Festival at Al Rayan Racecourse.

In less than two years Qatari horsemen have been investing in top class thoroughbred horses, to be trained in Qatar. For instance, the Group 1 European performers BEETHOVEN and JOSHUA TREE were sold by the Coolmore / Ballydoyle operation, to be trained in Doha by Ibrahim AL MALKI. Other top class local trainers did the same, including Alban de MIEULLE, B.GAZALI, Georges MIKHALIDES and others. But the most interesting fact about the investment in top level thoroughbred horses has been the purchase of high quality yearlings by the Qatari owners, including HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Khalifa AL THANI (Al SHAHANIA stud farm), HH Sheikh Abdulla Bin Khalifa AL THANI (UMM QARN Farm), who now keep those horses in training in France. Pearl Bloodstock also have horses in training in Great Britain and in France. What a giant step forward this has been – and what an achievement by Qatar!

In less than five years, we have seen Doha and Qatar real estate booming, the Qatar Foundation investing in education, the Qatar government investing in hundreds of foreign companies and in top class real estate projects in foreign countries, to ensure a bright future for Qatar. They have also invested many millions of pounds throughout the sporting world, particularly in the UK.

I am proud to have been, since 1990, not only a privileged witness in these events, but also part of this huge process to improve the horseracing and equestrian facilities of Qatar, particularly in the sponsorship of races in foreign countries, in order to give Qatar a visible and positive image. They have

supported races and race meetings as prestigious as the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Qatar Arabian World Championship to attract the attention of many millions of spectators worldwide.

There is also the huge success of the Qatar Endurance Team all around Europe, and the Al SHAQAB Stud can boast some of the most beautiful horses in the world. Then there is the rise of a young generation of show jumping riders, now competing at the highest international level.

We can only congratulate QATAR on a job well done and we wish good luck to all of

their equestrian activities and their enthusiastic investments throughout the equestrian and horseracing world and we look forward to your future victories.

Seul le Prix Niel était naguère considéré comme une préparatoire à l’Arc. Le gagnant du Jockey-Club y rendait du poids. Le Prix Vermeille, ouvert alors aux seules pouliches de trois ans, était

une fin en soi, et le Prix Foy une épreuve secondaire de groupe III, opposant des chevaux d’âge à poids inégaux. Aujourd’hui, la belle réunion des trois semaines avant la grande course apparaît bien plus comme une répétition générale, tous à poids égal. Seul le Prix Vermeille, groupe I, conserve un prestige quasi-intact, un tantinet érodé par l’ouverture aux aînées qui lui enlève le titre de « classique », donc réservé aux « trois ans ».

Ce trio de courses préparatoires était lancé par le Prix Foy, généralement le moins riche en fournisseur de gagnants d’Arc. Il se pourrait bien que cette tendance s’inverse cette année, car Royer-Dupré, qui avait le choix pour Sarafina entre cette course et le Vermeille, avait astucieusement choisi le Foy, pour lui épargner un clash avec Galikova en lui rendant quatre kilos de poids pour âge, écart sans doute favorable aux « trois ans » de nos jours.

De fait, Sarafina, montée un peu trop en confiance par Lemaire, aurait eu une course très facile si elle n’était tombée sur un japonais tout feu tout flamme, venu là sans crier gare, et qui l’a fait galoper jusqu’au bout. Il s’appelle Hiruno d’Amour et c’est un superbe outsider pour le 2 octobre, même si l’on parle bien

moins de lui que de Deep Impact ou de El Condor Pasa naguère. Tout le monde se rappelle que l’an passé, Sarafina avait été quasiment mise hors de course à l’entrée de la ligne d’arrivée et était revenue finir en trombe, donnant l’impression qu’elle aurait pu gagner ou en tout cas inquiéter Workforce.

Le première leçon du Prix Foy est que Sarafina a remarquablement réussi son passage de trois à quatre ans, la seconde est que l’élevage japonais reste un des plus performants au monde.

Aucune pouliche de trois ans ne dispute jamais le Prix Niel, groupe II qui leur est ouverte, laissant cette épreuve aux meilleurs poulains français. La course est généralement creuse. On se souvient encore de Peintre Célèbre battu par bien moins bon que lui, enfermé dans une course de quatre partants…

Très brillant lauréat du Grand Prix de Paris dur ce parcours, devant Reliable Man, Méandre partait favori. Deux mois d’absence ont engendré une totale inversion des valeurs. Méandre a beaucoup tiré, et n’a pu inquiéter Reliable Man qui a pris les affaires en main de bonne heure dans la ligne d’arrivée. Sans doute le représentant de la famille Rothschild était-il un peu frais.

Le président Rothschild admettait être déçu après la course et excluait l’hypothèse d’un virus dont la rumeur avait circulé. Méandre n’est pas engagé dans l’Arc, et ne pourrait le disputer que s’il est supplémenter pour 100.000 € le jeudi 29 septembre.

La décision sera prise au dernier moment, quand ce magazine sera édité. Cela dit, Royer Dupré n’avait pas caché qu’il envisageait sérieusement la revanche, avec changement de terrain et de tactique. Il croit autant à ce poulain qu’à Sarafina, mais peut-être parce qu’il est fils de « son » Dalakhani…

Le meilleur étalon au monde à ce jour est Galileo, fils de la gagnante d’Arc Urban Sea, mère d’un fantastique gagnant d’Arc, Sea The Stars. Eh bien Galileo est le père d’une pouliche pas très grande par la taille mais immense par le talent, Galikova, dont la mère a aussi produit Goldikova. Quelle naissance !

Elle était la grande favorite du Prix Vermeille. Entre temps, le terrain était devenu très collant, voire lourd, et cela n’a nullement gêné la pouliche à l’action aérienne, sui cette distance qu’elle abordait pour la première fois, prouvant qu’elle avait pris toutes ses aptitudes de son père et qu’elle ne ressemblait à sa championne de sœur que par la classe pure.

A-t-on vraiment appris des choses au cours de ce beau week-end. Oui et non, comme toujours. Primo, que Sarafina est toujours aussi bonne, et que le japonais Hiruno d’Amour est sûrement un « quatre ans » de classe. Secundo que la défaite radicale de Reliable Man dans le Grand Prix de Paris était trop mauvaise pour être sans excuse. Tertio qu’une seule pouliche de trois ans aura une vraie chance : la petite volante Galikova.

Sarafina and Galikova steal show

THE Qatar Arc Trials are supposed to provide an insight into the outcome of the Qatar Prix de l’arc de Triomphe but the September 11 running produced more questions

than answers.With the possible exception of the exceptional

Sarafina and Galikova the three races failed to convince conclusively the pecking order for the Big Day.

There were plenty of puzzles but few solutions. The happiest man at Longchamp was undoubtedly, Alain de Royer-Dupre. His two charges Sarafina and Reliable Man stole the show in the Prix Foy and the Prix Niel respectively and the Chantilly trainer ended the day a 2-1 favourite to have the Qatar Arc winner.

In the Group 2 Prix Foy, historically the least productive of the Trials in showcasing the Arc winner, Sarafina was understandably odds-on in the four-runner race. Alain de Royer-Dupre had warned that the Aga Khan’s filly was in need of her first race for almost six weeks, since impressing in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud.

She certainly didn’t disappoint, although I wondered whether jockey Christophe Lemaire deliberately took the more adventurous route between the fast-finishing Hiruno D’Amour and the retreating St.Nicholas Abbey. Maybe he was testing her resilience in the light of her near-disastrous treatment in last year’s Arc

scrum when she was almost brought down before bravely recovering to get up to grab third place.

Although it was evident that Lemaire was doing his utmost to give Sarafina an easy race, settling her into a comfortable rhythm at the rear, he did just enough to get her home by a short neck from Hiruno D’Amour. The Japanese four-year-old, having her first run since winning one of Japan’s biggest races, the two-mile Tenno Sho, in May, turned out to be the ‘dark horse’ of the Arc Trials.

Although there’s a big difference between the traffic problems and the relentless pace of the Qatar Arc and the four-horse Prix Foy, the experience jockey Shinji Fujita gained from his Longchamp debut and the flying finish he produced from Hiruno D’Amour will attract considerable support on the Big Day.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained St Nicholas Abbey clearly needed the race but finished a tired and well-beaten third in the soft ground, ahead of last-year’s Qatar Arc runner-up Nakayama Festa. The Japanese hopeful showed none of the class she produced last October and on this showing seems unlikely to pose a threat in the Qatar Arc.

But all things considered Sarafina has earned her position at centre stage and Alain de Royer-Dupre and Christophe Lemaire were understandably pleased with her performance. “This was her comeback run and she did exactly what we wanted her to do, so we’ve got to be happy with her,” said the trainer.

for the Qatar Arc he ran a satisfactory race. The fact that the Andre Fabre-trained Ley Hunter held on gamely after making a late run for the line to win the Group 3 Qatar Prix Gladiateur over a mile and seven-and-a-half furlongs also shows that the seven-times Arc winner’s stable has managed to contain the virus.

The Aga Khan’s Vadamar, trained by the man of the moment Alain de Royer-Dupre, finished a short neck behind Meandre but is destined for the Prix du Conseil de Paris, where he will be a serious contender.

Galikova proved everyone right when she cruised home to win the Prix Vermeille by a comfortable two-and-a-half lengths from Testosterone with Shareta a neck further back. Heavy rain followed the steady drizzle that fell for the first two Arc Trials making the going even softer but Galikova took the ground in her stride and made her debut over the Arc distance of one-and-a-half miles an impressive performance.

Olivier Peslier had the half-sister to the brilliant Goldikova handily placed coming down the home stretch and sent her on at the furlong post to challenge the leader Shareta and just went clear away from the field.

Trainer, Freddy Head, a four times Arc-winning jockey, and owners Alain and Gerard Wertheimer were delighted with the manner in which the daughter of Galileo handled the distance and the soft ground and although the hurly burly of the Qatar Arc will be a different prospect from the six-runner Prix Vermeille, Galikova is a fast-improving three-year-old and has to be considered a serious contender for the Qatar Arc.

The six-runner Group 2 Qatar Prix Niel for 3-year-old colts and fillies, produced a reversal in fortunes from the Grand Prix de Paris as Reliable Man turned the tables on Meandre to win with ease. Wiinners of the Prix Niel have gone on to win four Arcs since 2000 so the race is a genuine pointer for the main attraction.

Reliable Man was a deserving winner for Alain de Royer-Dupre and he showed the rest of the field a clean pair of hooves as he pulled away down the home stretch to win comfortably by two lengths from Meandre, who couldn’t make any impression on the winner.

The difference in the ground could have been a factor in the change in order in the two races. When Meandre beat Reliable Man by an emphatic four-and-a-half lengths in the Grand Prix de Paris it was on fast ground whereas the going in the Qatar Prix Niel was decidedly soft. But maybe Maxime Guyon was more concerned about giving Meandre a competitive yet gentle work-out than a hard race in the Prix Niel and driving him to the front earlier than he did.

There was certainly no sign of the virus that has affected Andre Fabre’s yard as Guyon struggled to settle Meandre into an easy rhythm on the run down the back straight. Meandre was keen and clearly eager to go forward and Guyon constantly had to hold him up. When he finally asked Meandre to go for home he didn’t get the response he had hoped for but had he eased him further to the front it may have been a different outcome.

Fabre and owner Edouard de Rothschild, President of France Galop, got the reassurance they were looking for in that Meandre had clearly not been affected by the virus and as a preparation

proof positive of the destiny of the 2011 Qatar Arc we know that Sarafina’s class and experience makes her the major challenger, Galikova’s quality and potential means she should be in the shake-up and the mud-loving Reliable Man must be taken seriously, the outcome is still far from clear. Perhaps one horse that should also be considered on this showing is the best of Japan’s three runners, Hiruno D’Amour. One unfortunate outcome of the Arc Trials is that Christophe Soumillon will miss the QatarArc due to receiving a 15-day ban for careless riding.

La blessure de Harbinger, lauréat désinvolte des « King George » semblait être le signe que Sir Michael Stoute devrait encore attendre pour remporter la seule course majeure en

Europe absente de son palmarès, le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Pourtant, ce dimanche 3 octobre 2010 sera bien celui de son sacre.

Devant des tribunes comme toujours pleines à craquer, le vainqueur du Derby d’Epsom, Workforce, a offert cette grande première à Sir Michael Stoute. La partie n’était cependant pas gagnée d’avance. Sa performance précédente dans les « King George » avait était particulièrement décevante, et surtout l’opposition emmenée par Fame And Glory, Youmzain ou encore Behkabad était de taille. Le représentant du Prince Khalid Abdullah va cette fois donner le meilleur de lui-même.

Monté patiemment par un Ryan Moore bien inspiré, le fils de King’s Best a tracé une superbe ligne droite pour venir à bout du japonais Nakayama Festa. Ce dernier semblait bien parti pour signer cette victoire que le peuple nippon attend depuis si longtemps. Mais il connaîtra le même sort qu’El Condor Pasa, qui n’avait pu contrer l’offensive de Montjeu onze ans plus tôt. A plus de deux longueurs de ce duel passionné, la championne française Sarafina s’est saisi de la troisième place, après avoir frôlé la chute dans la fausse ligne droite.

Certains observateurs la qualifieront même de gagnante morale. Comme Sea The Stars un an plus tôt, Workforce a donc réussi le difficile doublé Derby d’Epsom/ Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, mais c’est surtout le premier sacre de Sir Michael Stoute qui marquera les esprits. L’entraîneur de Newmarket avait tenté d’enlever cette épreuve de nombreuses fois, terminant notamment deuxième à deux reprises avec Pilsudski.

Après le Derby d’Epsom, le Derby d’Irlande, la Japan Cup, la Breeders’Cup, ou encore la Dubai World Cup, cette victoire dans l’Arc a des allures d’aboutissement pour l’homme originaire des Barbades. La Reine d’Angleterre l’avait anobli en 1998, la France aura attendu 2010. Si son jockey Ryan Moore est pour beaucoup dans cette victoire, que dire du propriétaire, le Prince Khalid Abdullah ? Ce membre de la famille royale d’Arabie Saoudite est devenu l’un des premiers éleveurs au monde, peut-être le premier tant il sort chaque année un cheval hors du commun.

Lui avait déjà triomphé dans l’Arc, en 1985 de façon controversée avec Rainbow Quest, en 1986 de la plus belle des manières avec Dancing Brave, et en 2006 avec Rail Link. Sa politique au niveau de l’élevage est remarquable, son attitude et sa fidélité à ses entraîneurs du même acabit. Le Prince Khalid Abdullah a ce qu’il mérite. 2011 est encore une année pleine pour lui, grâce au phénomène Frankel, et peut-être au doublé dans l’Arc de Workforce qui tentera de rejoindre Alleged le dimanche 2 octobre 2011.

La journée aux sept groupes I a logiquement mis en avant d’autres chevaux à commencer par Gentoo. Il est la preuve que le rêve est possible pour des « petits » propriétaires. Passé par les

courses à réclamer, il a survolé le Prix du Cadran qui récompense le cheval le plus endurant. Dans l’autre extrême, le Prix de l’Abbaye qui s’adresse aux sprinters, ce sont comme toujours des chevaux entraînés outre-Manche qui ont brillé, la victoire revenant cette année à la pensionnaire de Clive Cox, Gilt Edge Girl.

Misty For Me, lauréate du Critérium des Pouliches a offert une énième victoire à Aidan O’Brien dans une course de Groupe I pour 2 ans. Wootton Bassett a pleinement profité du parcours si particulier du Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère pour terminer sa saison invaincu. Les pensionnaires de Jean-Claude Rouget Lily Of The Valley et Stacelita se sont livré un très beau duel dans le Prix de L’Opéra, alors que la championne Goldikova a remporté le Prix de La Forêt sous la selle d’un Olivier Peslier génial.

As things turned out, October 3, 2010 was to be his hour of glory. In front of grandstands as ever packed to the rafters the Epsom Derby winner Workforce was the horse to supply Stoute with his first Arc. The gamble certainly wasn’t won in advance, as he had run disappointingly in his previous race behind Harbinger in the King George.

Then there was the strength of the runners lining up against him, in the shape of Fame And Glory, Youmzain and Bekhabad. Yet Prince Khalid Abdullah’s representative turned up at the top of his game. Ridden patiently by Ryan Moore the son of King’s Best roared down the straight and then had enough steel in his armour to edge out Nakayama Festa.

The latter went agonisingly close to providing Japan with their long-awaited first Arc triumph, but he was to suffer the same fate as El Condor Pasa, who was unable to respond when challenged by Montjeu 11 years earlier.

Two lengths back from the front two came the fast-finishing Sarafina, judged by some to have been the moral victor after almost being brought down before the final turn by a weakening rival.

Barbados was knighted by the Queen in 1998, and in 2010 it was the turn of France to honour him. As for Workforce’s owner, Prince Khalid Abdullah, a member of the Saudi royal family, is one of the world’s leading owner-breeders, one of the world’s leading owners as each season he produces a horse of extraordinary ability.

Prince Khalid Abdullah had already tasted victory in the Arc in 1985 in controversial fashion with Rainbow Quest, then in 1986 with the sensational Dancing Brave, and again, for a third time in 2006 with Rail Link.

He is noted for the loyalty he displays towards his trainers, and again in 2011 he has been graced with a horse of exceptional quality in the shape of Frankel. Perhaps Workforce will become the first back to back winner of the Arc since Alleged in 1977-78.

The Arc was one of seven Group Ones, with Gentoo the first to hit the target to prove that dreams can come true for the smaller owner. He graduated from claiming company to sweep to victory under a clever ride by Gerald Mosse in the Prix du Cadran in which the emphasis is on stamina.

At the other end of the distance spectrum is the Prix de l’Abbaye, the sprint which so often falls to an overseas runner. This edition was won by Clive Cox’s Gilt Edge Girl, the four-year-old filly springing a 53-1 surprise and a first success at the highest level for his trainer and jockey Luke Morris.

Aidan O’Brien won yet another two-year-old Group One with Misty For Me in the Criterium des Pouliches, the daughter of Galileo comfortably holding off 10-11 favourite Helleborine.

Wootton Basset then obliged in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere to finish his season unbeaten with five wins from five outings and giving his trainer-jockey combination, Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan, their first success at this level. Tin Horse and Maiguri dead-heated for second.

Jean-Claude Rouget’s runners Lily Of The Valley and 6-4 favourite Stacelita came first and second respectively in the Prix de l’Opera while France’s leading lady Goldikova dazzled again in the Prix de la Foret, defeating her stablemates Paco Boy and Dick Turpin.

This was Goldikova’s 11th Group One triumph, surpassing the previous holder of the record of top notch wins in Europe, Miesque, ridden of course by Goldikova’s trainer Freddie and trained by his sister Criquette.

Jockey Olivier Peslier summed up the occasion in one word: “Wonderful.” A description that could also be applied to the entire afternoon’s 2010 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe action.

Dix sept Pur Sang arabes se présentaient sous les ordres du starter. Parmi eux, deux épouvantails : General GB, un fils d’Amer, le tenant du

titre, et Jalnar Al Khalidiah KSA, par Tiwaiq, le challenger. Tous les deux avaient un solide palmarès à faire valoir.

General se présentait comme le principal atout de l’écurie tête de liste de Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al Thani. Outre sa splendide victoire de l’année précédente dans cette même épreuve, il avait accumulé une série de performances qui lui permettait d’afficher de sérieuses prétentions.

Il restait sur une victoire en Turquie dans l’épreuve phare, le Malazgirt Trophy (Gr.1 PA) sur 1600 m où il devançait Nokomys, et Nashwan Al Khalidiah, tous deux également partants à Longchamp. Il avait précédemment terminé 3° du Prix Manganate-Shadwell-(Gr.1 PA) à Deauville, battu de 3 longueurs par Jalnar Al Khalidiah.

A sa décharge, il effectuait alors une rentrée depuis sa saison hivernale au Qatar. Et le doigté de son entraîneur, Alban de Mieulle, pour préparer les grands évènements ne laissait planer aucun doute sur son niveau de préparation au jour J à Longchamp. Il venait de remporter, la veille à Longchamp, l’épreuve réservée aux pouliches de 4 ans arabes,

prouvant ainsi la forme de l’écurie. Jalnar Al Khalidiah arrivait fort du label d’invaincu. Il était le joker de l’autre grande écurie du jour, Al Khalediah Stables, appartenant au Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, Il restait sur une victoire dans l’épreuve préparatoire à Longchamp en septembre, le Prix Dragon (Gr.2 PA) où il avait battu Raqiyah par cinq longueurs, en faisant très grosse impression.

Celle-ci n’étant pas la moindre venue, et la facilité avec laquelle Jalnar Al Khalidiah l’avait devancée augurait d’un beau débat à venir. Lors de sa sortie précédente, le fils de Tiwaiq avait survolé le Prix Manganate-Shadwell (Gr.1 PA), en se promenant 2,5 longueurs devant Nieshan, et 3 longueurs devant General .

Jalnar Al Khalidiah avait peu couru auparavant, mais chacune de ses prestations suggéraient une très grande qualité. Il bénéficiait du suivi attentif de l’entraîneur tête de liste Jean François Bernard, réputé pour son perfectionnisme, dont la réussite avec les chevaux issus de tous horizons n’est plus à prouver, et qui venait de faire un carton plein, la veille à St Cloud dans les épreuves des 3 ans arabes.

Le déroulement de la course fut limpide. Nashwan Al Khalidiah s’installa au commandement dès la sortie des boites, talonné par Mu’azzaz, le leader de Jaafer. General se

plaçait en cinquième position, derrière Damis, son leader. Jaafer, Jalnar Al Khalidiah et Raqiyah patientaient à l’arrière garde.

L’ordre restait inchangé jusqu’à la fausse ligne droite, sur laquelle Jalnar Al Khalidiah se rapprochait très librement à l’extérieur. Nashwan Al Khalidiah, Mu’azzaz et Jalnar Al Khalidiah qui semblait avoir avalé le peloton, se présentaient ensemble en tête à l’entrée de la ligne droite.

Jalnar Al Khalidiah prenait aussitôt le meilleur sur eux, et semblait pouvoir faire la différence, mais surgissait du peloton General qui, très vite, se portait à sa hauteur, puis lui prenait une bonne longueur. Le reste du peloton semblait s’arrêter, tandis que les deux contenders se détachaient irrésistiblement, mais Jalnar Al Khalidiah ne baissait pas de pied, et foulées après foulées, remontait inexorablement son adversaire.

General parvenait à conserver sur le poteau une courte tête sur son rival. Huit longueurs derrière, Raqiyah et Jaafer, qui étaient revenus de l’arrière garde tout au long de la ligne droite, prenait la troisième et la quatrième place à Aziz qui s’était très bien défendu, et devançait de quatre longueurs le reste du peloton.Nous venions d’assister à une arrivée magnifique, qui enthousiasma le public, ultime preuve de l’intégration des courses arabes dans ce week-end.

THE 2010 Qatar Arabian World Cup promised to be a vintage renewal, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Some 17 pure bred Arabians lined up, among them

two giants – General (GB), a son of Amer and holder of the title, and Jalnar Al Khalidiah (KSA), by Tiwaiq, the main challenger. Both had strong recent form behind them.General was the leader of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s stable.

Besides his splendid win in last year’s race General had put together a series of recent performances that made him a serious contender to do the double. He had won the main event in Turkey, the Malazgirt Trophy (Gr.1 PA) over 1600m where he defeated Nokomys, and Nashwan Al Khalidiah, both of whom are in opposition again at Longchamp. Before that he came third in the Prix Manganate-Shadwell (Gr.1 PA) at Deauville, beaten three lengths by Jalnar Al Khalidiah. In General’s defence he was making his return to action after his winter season in Qatar.

Through the ability of General’s trainer, Alban de Mieulle, to prepare his charges for the main event he has left no doubt about his level of readiness for D-Day at Longchamp. The stable had also won the race confined to four-year-old fillies the day before at Longchamp, underlining the form of his yard. The unbeaten Jalnar Al Khalidiah was the star of the other big stable, Al Khalediah, belonging to Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz. He tuned up by winning the preparatory race at Longchamp in September, the Prix Dragon (Gr.2 PA) where he had proved five lengths too strong for Raqiyah, making a strong impression in the process. The runner up is a smart performer but the manner in which Jalnar Al Khalidiah had seen him off augured well for the main event. Before that run, the son of Tiwaiq comfortably

landed the Prix Manganate-Shadwell (Gr.1 PA) by two-and-a-half lengths in front of Nieshan and three lengths ahead of General. Jalnar Al Khalidiah had seen very little action before but in each of his appearances he had shown he was a horse of great quality. He benefited from the careful attention of his trainer, Jean-Francois Bernard, renowned for his perfectionism and who had nothing to prove from his success with horses from all quarters. Bernard arrived at the meeting having lifted the three-year-old pure bred Arabian races at Saint-Cloud the day before. Right from the off Nashwan Al Khalidiah took control, tracked by Mu’azzaz, Jaafer’s pacemaker. General was lying fifth behind Damis, his pacemaker. Jaafer, Jalnar Al Khalidiah and Raqiyah were waiting patiently behind, ready to pounce. The order remained unchanged up to the false straight where Jalnar Al Khalidiah came with a free-flowing run on the outside. Nashwan Al Khalidiah, Mu’azzaz and Jalnar Al Khalidiah were fighting it out at the head of affairs at the beginning of the straight. Jalnar Al Khalidiah then hit the front and appeared to have done enough to hold on for victory, but surging out of the pack came General under Olivier Peslier who very quickly came up alongside him and pulled a length clear. The rest of the field seemed to be treading water while the two battled it out up front. Jalnar Al Khalidiah wasn’t about to give in, and stride by stride he reeled in his great rival only for General to hold on to cross the line by a short head. Raqiyah and Jaafer, who had made up late ground from the back, took third and fourth, eight lengths away, with next home Aziz, who came in four lengths clear of the chasing pack.

It was a magnificent finish to the final Arabian race of a fascinating weekend of world class racing.

Avec un père officier des Haras Nationaux, Alain de Royer Dupré possède des origines déterminantes. Et il n’a

pas failli à sa destiné. Loin de n’être qu’un simple metteur au point, il a l’oeil. Celui qui permet de dénicher la pierre précieuse, d’en tirer le meilleur, de tailler le diamant selon ses qualités, ses défauts. Il est avant tout un homme de cheval dans toute l’acception du terme. Notre homme est un autodidacte.

Il sait, mieux que quiconque, lire l’animal. Après un début de carrière dans la Sarthe (et quelques stages chez des entraîneurs provinciaux), c’est en 1983, à la disparition de François Mathet, en charge alors de l’effectif princier, qu’Alain de Royer Dupré prendra la relève...

Un «travail d’orfèvre»Le métier de chroniqueur

comporte ses avantages. Assister à un entraînement chez Alain de Royer Dupré en est un ! C’est Philippe Allaire, un autre jeune premier, qui l’explique mieux que personne.

Il affirme être «retourné à l’école» en témoignant d’une leçon prise sur la piste des Aigles avec son professeur cantilien. «J’ai eu l’impression qu’au trot, on était des bricoleurs. C’est du travail d’orfèvre, de l’horlogerie suisse !»

Il me revient en mémoire un moment passé avec une équipe de Canal + dans les brumes matinales du plus grand centre d’entraînement au monde.

Les spécialistes du petit écran avaient installé, non sans quelques aventures trop longues à conter ici, une caméra «super loupe» capable d’enregistrer jusqu’à 7.000 images par seconde (soit 300 fois plus qu’une caméra traditionnelle).

Non seulement Alain de Royer Dupré a immédiatement accepté la contrainte d’avoir un car régie au milieu du gazon (ce qui change un peu du mutisme de certains), mais il a pris un plaisir évident à regarder son cheval courir au ralenti «ultra slow motion» !

Le regard était pétillant, attentif à l’équilibre du pur-sang, à ses appuis. Le procédé était «fantastique». Ce qui l’était plus encore, c’était la curiosité de l’érudit et, surtout, l’oeil.

Les deux cordes qu’il possède à son Arc ont été tendues par des champions, Dalakhani (2003) et Zarkava (2008), qui avaient respectivement gagné le Jockey-Club et le Diane.

Sarafina, l’an passé, et Reliable Man ont eux aussi vaincu les meilleurs de leur génération. Troisième malchanceuse de l’édition 2010 du Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, la demoiselle a soif de revanche.

«Sa grande qualité reste sa réactivité. Sa capacité à accélérer en peu de temps est remarquable». Si elle n’avait failli chuter, il y a douze mois, où aurait-elle terminé son parcours ? Difficile à dire, mais une chose est sûre, toute sa préparation a été axée sur cet objectif. Sa victoire dans le Prix Foy achèvera de convaincre les plus sceptiques.

Le mâle, quant à lui, bénéficie d’une certaine affection de son mentor. Compréhensible, puisqu’il s’agit d’un rejeton du bien-aimé Dalakhani. Noblesse oblige, son potentiel est digne de son illustre géniteur. «Pour amener un poulain qui n’a couru que deux maidens directement sur un Groupe I, il faut qu’on l’estime un peu. Il possède une amplitude incroyable et comble beaucoup de terrain en galopant. Il ne tire pas, c’est un cheval sûr». Défendant les couleurs

Selon l’état du terrain, il se pourrait bien qu’un autre représentant de Son Altesse Aga Khan soit de la partie. Vadamar, amateur de pistes assouplies, et Shareta, qui affectionne plutôt le beau temps, scrutent le ciel depuis leurs box cantiliens... en vert et contre tous, ils sont également prêts à relever le défi, celui de la plus belle course au monde.

WITH his father working for the National Stud Alain de Royer Dupré’s origins proved decisive – and he didn’t miss his date with

destiny. De Royer Dupré has that rare quality of being able to unearth uncut diamonds, selecting the best one, working the diamond according to its qualities and taking into account its faults.

He is, above all, a horseman in every sense of the word. Self taught, he knows, better than anyone how to understand a horse. After beginning his career in the Sarthe region, and several apprenticeships with provincial trainers, it was in 1983 on the death of Francois Mathet that he took charge of the Aga Khan’s stable.

One of the advantages of working as a racing journalist is to be an onlooker at one of Alain de Royer Dupré’s training sessions. One man who can explain that better than most is Philippe Allaire, who likens the experience to “returning to school” when joining his ‘teacher’ on the gallops at les Aigles.“I had the impression that

in trotting, we were ‘do it yourself enthusiasts’ but his is the work of a craftsman, of a Swiss watchmaker!” That brings to mind a memory of a misty early morning at Chantilly, one of the biggest training centres in the world, with Canal+ television.

The specialist equestrian channel had turned up with a camera capable of capturing 7,000 images per second (that’s 300 times more than the normal lens). Alain de Royer Dupré not only accepted the constraints of having an outside broadcast in the middle of the gallops but he also took obvious pleasure in watching his horse run in ‘slow motion’.

His eyes were sparkling, watchful of the balance of the thoroughbred, The process was “fantastic” and what made it more so was the curiosity of the intellectual, and above all, his eye for the horse.

“The biomechanic is as important as the form. In order for the horse to gallop fast using a minimum of effort he has to be perfect to enhance his skill.”A horse will have even more

chance of winning the Arc if he knows how to exploit his talents. Alain de Royer Dupre’s toll of big race victories speaks volumes.

Not only has he won France’s greatest races but his name also figures on the hit parade in all four corners of the globe, with successes in England, Asia, the United States and Australia.

His two Arc triumphs were supplied by Dalakhani in 2003 and by Zarkava in 2008, winners respectively of the Prix du Jockey-Club and the Prix de Diane. Sarafina (last year) and Reliable Man also defeated the best of their generation.

An unlucky third in the 2010 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the filly is hungry for revenge. “Sarafina’s big quality is her ability to react, her capacity to accelerate in a matter of strides is remarkable,” says de Royer Dupré

Where would she have finished if she hadn’t almost been brought down last year? It’s hard to say, but one thing is clear, her entire season has been aimed at this one objective. Her win in

the Qarar Prix Foy last month silenced her most ardent critics. As for the colt, Reliable Man, he is held in special affection his trainer. That’s understandable, given that he is the progeny of the much loved Dalakhani. His potential is worthy of his illustrious sire.

To go straight for a Group 1 with a colt who had only run in two maidens shows that Reliable Man is held in high regard. “He possesses incredible scope and covers so much ground. He doesn’t pull, he’s a solid horse,” says his trainer.

Sporting the colours of the Pride Racing Club (another champion trained by Alain de Royer Dupré), a victory for him would complete the circle.

Depending on the ground the Aga Khan could also be represented by either Vadamar, a soft-ground specialist, or Shareta, who prefers good conditions. They are keeping a close eye on the weather from their Chantilly boxes wondering whether they will be taking up the challenge of tackling the greatest race in the world.

Voir un cheval néo-zélandais au départ du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est extraordinaire, le voir s’imposer serait unique. C’est pourtant quelque chose qui est aujourd’hui dans le domaine du possible. La « multinationale » Coolmore a pris l’habitude, depuis quelques saisons, de recruter des

chevaux dans l’hémisphère sud. Après le miler Haradasun et le sprinter Starspangledbanner, ils ont acquis il y a près d’un an So You Think. Les raisons de cet achat sont multiples.

Tout d’abord, sa qualité. So You Think a réalisé en Australie une carrière impressionnante avec de multiples victoires dans des Groupes I, et notamment deux succès dans le très convoité Cox Plate. Sur 2000 mètres, il a fait un véritable sans-faute l’an passé, raison pour laquelle il était le grand favori de la dernière Melbourne Cup.

Sa lourde charge et surtout la longue distance de 3200 mètres expliquent sans doute son incapacité à contrer, ce jour-là, l’attaque du pensionnaire d’Alain de Royer-Dupré, Américain. Il conclura finalement au troisième rang à plus de trois longueurs du lauréat. Mais cela n’entache en rien sa grande valeur. Coolmore a probablement aussi été sensible à son pedigree. Car So You Think est sans conteste le meilleur produit de l’étalon High Chaparral.

Le vainqueur du Derby d’Epsom 2002 ne connaît pas une réussite exceptionnelle au haras, sur le vieux continent. Ses meilleurs produits ont tous brillé en Australie ou en Amérique, et son attrait en Europe n’est pas à la hauteur des premières espérances. En transférant So You Think en Irlande, ils lui ont permis d’enregistrer son premier vainqueur de groupe I en Europe. Depuis qu’il a rejoint l’écurie d’Aidan O’brien, il a en effet bien étoffé son palmarès.

THE label on the bottle might say Coolmore, but So You Think, who flies the flag for Aidan O’Brien’s powerful Tipperary operation in the Qatar Prix de l’arc de

Triomphe, is as Australian as the kangaroo - even though the Kiwis will be quick to point out that he is actually New Zealand-bred.

Many folk Down Under claim that So You Think, twice a winner of the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, Australia’s most prestigious weight-for-age race, is the best horse to have emerged from the Southern Hemisphere since the legendary Phar Lap, and he has certainly looked the part since he transferred to European shores earlier this year. Coolmore’s John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith parted with A$25m to secure a majority interest in So You Think, who started favourite for last year’s Melbourne Cup, his first attempt beyond 2,040 metres where he finished

an honourable third behind Americain on rain-softened ground. Owners Dato Tan Chin Nan and Tunku Ahmad Yahaya admitted that were forced to “think long and hard” before accepting Coolmore’s bid, not least because of their close allegiance with multi-Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Bart Cummings, who had done such a brilliant job in nurturing So You Think to the top. So You Think is a muscular colt who is built like a heavyweight boxer, but, while nobody doubts his presence and impeccable CV, O’Brien concedes that they are going into unknown territory at Longchamp. O’Brien said: “We have been lucky to have had some brilliant horses here at Ballydoyle, but So You Think could just be the best of the lot. Watching him gallop in the mornings is the most amazing feeling – he seems to take one stride to every other horse’s two, and some of the work he has done has been simply spectacular

and left me with goosebumps on the back of my neck. “When he came over from Australia we adopted the softly-softly approach, giving him time to acclimatise while building up his confidence with easy wins in the Moorebridge Stakes and the Tattersalls Gold Cup. “However, I left him undercooked at Royal Ascot, where he was beaten by Rewilding in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. I take the blame for that defeat – I had been just too easy on him at home. He’s a big powerhouse of a horse and he needs plenty of work. “We got it right for the Eclipse, where he got the better of Workforce in what was an epic scrap between two bruisers, and then we gave him a nice break and brought him back for the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. He had to fight hard there, too, because Snow Fairy was right back to her best, but So You Think relishes a battle and he got the job done.

est parvenu à le devancer cette année dans des Prince of Wales’s Stakes mémorables. Sa probable participation au Prix de l’Arc de triomphe va donc encore augmenter le caractère international de l’épreuve. Sa victoire serait une grande première pour l’élevage néo-zélandais, mais ce n’est pourtant pas la première fois qu’il est représenté dans un Arc de Triomphe.

En 1977, un autre néo-zélandais avait remarquablement défendu les couleurs de ce pays qui compte à peine plus de quatre millions d’habitants. Son nom, Balmerino. Pour de nombreux observateurs français, « l’Arc » 1977 aurait d’ailleurs dû lui revenir. Ses malheurs durant le parcours, et la monte inspirée de Lester Piggott sur Alleged l’ont privé de la victoire. Mais sa brillante fin de course, qui lui permit de prendre la deuxième place, laissera un souvenir particulier de ce cheval. So You Think a les épaules pour le « venger », c’est une évidence.

Il lui reste maintenant à prouver sa qualité sur 2400 mètres, une distance sur laquelle il n’a encore jamais triomphé, et à dompter la montée de Longchamp, qui a si souvent perturbé ses néophytes. Son père, High Chaparral, avait du, lui, se contenter de la troisième place lors de ses deux apparitions à Longchamp.

There was then talk of going back to Australia for an unprecedented third Cox Plate, but the quarantine regulations make things difficult, and, in any event, if he returned home that would be it for the season, whereas now we have the opportunity of keeping him going after Paris. “The boys could have taken the soft option and gone for the English Champion Stakes at Ascot, but I doubt whether John, Michael or Derrick have ever walked away from a challenge in their lives, and it was no surprise when they told me that they wanted to have

a crack at the Arc. Obviously, the proviso is that the ground is not too soft. People say that stamina won’t be a problem as he has run in the Melbourne Cup, but there is a world of difference between that two-mile handicap and a Group 1 race like the Qatar Arc.

“Longchamp is a tough mile and a half (2,400 metres), and So You Think has so much speed. He’s a one-off and, having lost Pour Moi through injury, Coolmore were obviously keen to be involved in such a great race as the Arc, so weather permitting we will be there.”

« Workforce a ce qu’il faut pour réaliser le doublé »En près d’un siècle d’histoire,

six chevaux seulement ont réussi la passe de deux dans l’Arc. Le dernier est Alleged, il y a trente trois ans,

mais malgré la défaite de Workforce par Nathaniel dans les King George, un certain optimisme règne dans l’écurie Stoute.

Alors que l’an passé, pas même Stoute n’était sûr d’avoir récupéré Workforce après sa lutte avec Harbinger, il sait que cette année il a cédé le pas à un poulain de haut rang.

Stoute aime bien laisser ses propriétaires se faire eux-mêmes une idée de la valeur et de la forme de leurs chevaux, pour participer à leurs plans de course établis avec leurs experts.

Stoute est bien conscient que le prince Khalid Abdullah est un des plus puissants propriétaires éleveurs du monde qu’il ne peut se permettre de perdre, et dans ce but il tient au courant au jour le jour le manager Lord Grimthorpe de ce qui se passe pour chaque cheval.

Grimthorpe sait bien que Stoute et son jockey, l’ancienne cravache d’or Ryan Moore, sont peu expansifs, et il joue plutôt les gentils garçons avec eux. Il rapporte :

« Avec ces deux-là, il faut lire entre les lignes. Ryan, blessé à l’épaule en juillet à Goodwood, s’efforce de la guérir, et côté Stoute,

il me paraît très positif sur Workforce.« Bien sûr, nous aurions aimer débarquer à

Longchamp avec un succès dans les King George sur notre carte de visite, mais sa course a tout de même été meilleure que celle de l’an passé, bien qu’il ait beaucoup penché à gauche pour finir.

Quand un cheval verse aussi fort, c’est souvent le signe d’une douleur, mais les multiples tests vétérinaires subis n’ont montré aucune anomalie. Il s’est peut-être donné un coup, de toute façon sa course est bonne.

« Après un peu de relâche, il ,a repris le travail sérieux et semble très bien.. Nous avons préféré lui donner un bon galop à Sandown plutôt qu’une course préparatoire, comme nous l’avons fait l’an passé, et cela a bien fonctionné

« Malheureusement le gazon léger nous a empêchés de disputer la Breeders’ Cup Turf

à Churchill Downs l’an passé. Son repos hivernal lui a fait physiquement le plus grand bien, et c’est facilement qu’il a fait une rentrée victorieuse dans les Brigadier Gerard Stakes à Sandown en mai. »

« Comme il apprécie Sandown Park, nous l’avons présenté dans les Eclipse Stakes, tout en sachant que les 2000 mètres seraient un rien trop courts, et il n’a pas démérité en terminant à une longueur de So You Think, grand champion dans les deux hémisphères.

Allonger le cheval à 2400 mètres est plutôt un avantage et il retrouve là le parcours de sa meilleure performance. C’est assez ironique car le poulain est par King’s Best, généralement père de milers, mais nous nous sommes aperçus que sa mère pouvait lui avoir amené la tenue. Peu importe d’ailleurs, il tient bien ! ».

IN the 91-year history of Europe’s greatest thoroughbred race only six horses have managed to win the Qatar-sponsored Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe twice. Coolmore’s

brilliant back-to-back Champion, Alleged, was the last to achieve that feat in 1978, but, while Workforce, the hero from 12 months ago, was well beaten by Nathaniel in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot earlier this year, there are encouraging vibes coming out of Sir Michael Stoute’s Newmarket stable that Workforce might yet join the elite on that illustrious roll of honour on this first Sunday in October.

Whereas, last year not even Stoute was sure that he had got Workforce back to his best following an abysmal run behind Harbinger in Ascot’s midsummer showpiece, this time around, despite getting beaten on the Royal Heath having gone walkabout when drifting violently left in the final 200 metres, Workforce performed with credit against a colt who is potentially rated one of the best three-year-olds in Europe.

Stoute is never one to shout from the rooftops about the ability of the horses he trains, causing some of his owners occasionally to make their own enquiries about the progress and running plans of their horses from racing experts rather

than from Stoute’s Freemason Lodge.However, Barbados-born Stoute is well

aware that Prince Khalid Abdullah is one of the most powerful owner-breeders in the world, and the last thing he would wish to do is to lose the Saudi Arabian’s patronage because of his lack of PR skills, so he always makes an effort to keep Abdullah’s racing manager, Lord Grimthorpe, up to speed with information on all his horses.

Consequently, Teddy Beckett, as Lord Grimthorpe was known before he inherited the title following the death of his father, seemed the right person to ask to get a progress report on Workforce.

Knowing how difficult Stoute and former champion jockey Ryan Moore can be when confronted by a posse of racing hacks, Grimthorpe was only too willing to “play the good guy”.

He said: ”Neither Michael nor Ryan are that effusive, so it is always a case of reading between the lines. But while Ryan has been busy trying to make sure that he gets fit in time, having suffered that bad shoulder injury at Goodwood in July, the signals I have been getting from the trainer are very much on the positive side about Workforce.

“Obviously, we would have liked to be going to Longchamp with a King George victory on our CV, but Workforce did not

have half as bad an experience at Ascot this year as he did last year, though naturally you would have preferred to have seen him run straight all the way to the line rather than careering over to the stands side.”

When horses hang so badly it’s often because they are hurting somewhere, but Lord Grimthorpe stressed that every test in the veterinary manual was carried out on last year’s seven lengths Epsom Derby winner after Ascot, and nothing abnormal was found.

He added: ”The fact that he clipped heels with poor Rewilding (the Godolphin horse that broke a leg in the straight and had to be put down) on the home turn was almost certainly a contributory factor, and, in the circumstances, Workforce did well to finish second.

“Since resuming full exercise he has been working well and seems right back on track. Rather than giving him a prep-race we took him to Sandown for a racecourse gallop. We did the same last year and it worked, so why change a successful formula?

“It was unfortunate that Workforce was unable to run in the Breeders Cup last year because of the firm ground at Churchill Downs, but, apart from

Ascot, he has not done a lot wrong this season. He thrived during his winter break and strengthened up again for the new season, returning in style to win the Group Three Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in May. We took him back to Sandown for the Eclipse, even though we knew that the mile and a quarter (2000 metres) was always going to be on the sharp side, and he lost nothing in defeat in being beaten half a length by So You Think, who has shown that he is a real champion both in the northern and southern hemisphere.

“Stepping back up in trip is definitely a positive, and Longchamp is a course which suits Workforce as it gives him time to build up a full head of steam. He stays very well, which is somewhat ironic as in the spring of his three-year-old campaign I suggested to Michael that I had grave reservations about him getting the mile and a half (2400 metres).

“He’s by King’s Best, who won the 2,000 Guineas and was an out-and-out miler who produced similar types to himself, but, while I thought that Workforce might fit that mould, too, we soon discovered that he got the stamina from the dam’s side. It’s nice to be proved wrong sometimes!”

« Comme son père, Nathaniel est à son aise quand les mottes de gazon volent, tant qu’il n’y a pas de trou dans la piste.. C’était du bon terrain quand il a

été battu à la photo dans le Chester Vase, un mal pour un bien qui lui a épargné le Derby sur une piste qui ne lui aurait pas convenu.. Non plus que Chester, d’ailleurs ».

« Quand il bondit pour gagner de cinq longueurs les King Edward VII Stakes à Royal Ascot, il nous a convaincus de sa grande classe.. Avant cette course, on songeait à l’orienter vers le St Léger, mais le style de son succès poussa son entourage à revoir ses ambitions à la hausse, et malgré les présences de Workforce et de Rewilding, nous nous décidâmes pour les King George.

La course fut malheureusement gâchée par la mort de Rewilding, mais Nathaniel gagna en étant constamment à la pointe du combat et il mérite tout naturellement d’aller à Longchamp avec une belle chance.

« Il a fallu le supplémenter pour Ascot, et il faudra

en faire autant pour l’Arc, mais les Rothschild sont sportifs, et il n’a jamais été question de ne pas le faire si sa préparation se faisait sans accroc. Or il a forci depuis Ascot et est prêt à courir une grande course.

« Nathaniel restera à l’entraînement à quatre ans et il devrait faire un champion à cet âge. Il a progressé tranquillement cette saison

J’ai entraîné trois chevaux de sa famille, et cela me sert beaucoup à le comprendre, à éviter qu’il devienne caractériel.

L’an passé, William Buick avait fait connaissance avec Longchamp dans le Prix Foy qu’il gagnait avec Duncan, candidat à l’Arc. Son père Walter fut huit fois cravache d’or en Norvège. Fin 2010 il est devenu premier jockey chez Gosden. C’est un exploit pour cet ancien champion apprenti aujourd’hui âgé de 23 ans.

Gosden a été critiqué pour sa rupture avec Jimmy Fortune, mais son jugement a été rapidement récompensé quand Buick a remporté à Dubaï la Sheema Classic en selle sur Dar Re Mi (5 millions de dollars).

« William est un jeune homme de grand talent et de sang-froid. Il a l’intelligence de passer l’hiver aux US et à Dubaï, apprenant ainsi à monter au chrono, ce qui m’a impressionné. Dettori me l’a aussi chaudement recommandé. J’ai saisi l’occasion avant qu’il me passe sous le nez. »

Huit succès en groupe I plus tard ont convaincu William qu’accepter l’offre de Gosden était la meilleure décision qu’il ait prise à ce jour.

« C’est un grand monsieur pour qui travailler. Il a toujours estimé Nathaniel, mais c’est un cheval difficile, et le fait que John a entraîné trois proches parents l’a beaucoup aidé à le préparer comme il convenait.

« Nous avons vu le poulain gagner en confiance cette année. Je savais qu’il était bon, mais à quel point il était bon seulement après les King George. Nathaniel n’a pas encore tout montré. Si le terrain est très souple dans l’Arc, ce sera mieux encore. Longchamp est une piste très difficile. Elle est rapide et pour un oui ou pour un non, vous vous retrouvez expédié en quatrième épaisseur.

« Rappelez-vous ceci : si les parapluies sont de sortie, et si le cheval est dans sa forme d’Ascot, je monterai le cheval à battre. »

THE Classic generation has emerged triumphant seven times in the last eight years in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and John Gosden feels that Nathaniel, the only horse

who has got close enough to threaten the mighty Frankel, has just the right CV to strike another blow for the three-year-old division at Longchamp on October 2.

Victory for Nathaniel, who ran the unbeaten Frankel to half a length when the pair made their racecourse debut at Newmarket last summer, would be sweet revenge for Gosden, who still maintains that Lady Luck robbed his late father Towser of an historic Arc victory 51 years ago with Aggressor.

Turning the clock back half a century, Gosden said: “Aggressor had beaten the brilliant Petite Etoile in the King George at Ascot that year, and he was at the top of his game.

“I was only nine years old at the time, but I remember watching Jimmy Lindley ride him in his final gallop at the back of the old Lewes racecourse. The horse was flying and everything was right for him as he loved soft ground and it

had rained all through September - but during exercise he flipped over and tore all the muscles in his back.

“We were all convinced that Aggressor would have won in Paris, and, though we then took him to America for the Washington International, the ground there was rock hard, so we pulled him out and sent him to stud.

“Like Aggressor, Nathaniel is also at his best when the mud is flying. As long as there is no jar in the ground he will be in his element.

It was good to firm when he ran Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach to a head in the Chester Vase, but getting beat there might have been a blessing in disguise because had the photo-finish gone our way the owners would probably have opted for the Derby.

“However, Epsom would not have been Nathaniel’s course. He was all over the place coming down the hill and was never the same again.

“Like Percussionist, Nathaniel has a high action and Chester did not suit him either, but we got away with it and when he bounced back and won the King Edward VII Stakes by five lengths

at Royal Ascot we knew we had a proper horse. “Before that race we were thinking more of the

St Leger, but the way he won justifiably had the owner (Nat Rothschild) looking to raise the bar, and, though Workforce and Rewilding were both standing in our way in the King George, we decided to give it a go.

“Obviously, the race was marred by the tragic death of Rewilding, but you had to be impressed with the manner in which Nathaniel galloped all the way to the line, and he must go to Longchamp with a solid chance.

“The owner had to supplement him for Ascot and he has again had to dig deep into his pockets to add him to the Arc field as Nathaniel had not even broken his maiden when the Longchamp entries closed.

“But the Rothschilds are a sporting family and after Ascot there was never any doubt that they would supplement if the preparation went smoothly.

“The plan is to keep Nathaniel in training next year and he could be a very exciting four-year-old. He has strengthened up since Ascot and is ready to run a big race now.

“We ruffled Frankel›s feathers last year and we have brought him along steadily this season. That patience is starting to pay off, and, while he can get fizzy, that is the nature of the family. I have trained three of them and have learned their traits along the way. It’s no good getting older at this game if you don’t also get wiser.”

Gosden had a genuine contender in last year’s Arc with Duncan, who three weeks earlier had provided young William Buick with his first Longchamp victory in the Prix Foy. Buick, whose father Walter was eight-times champion jockey in Norway, is coming to the end of his second season as the retained rider at Gosden’s powerful Newmarket stable, and the 23-year-old former champion

apprentice has grabbed his chance with both hands.Gosden had been criticised for sacking stable

jockey Jimmy Fortune, but his judgement in putting his faith in youth was quickly rewarded when Buick won on his first major ride for the stable on Dar Re Mi in the $5m Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan last year.

“William is a talented and very level-headed young man,” said Gosden. “He had the good sense to spend several winters in America and Dubai to gain experience of riding against the clock. That impressed me, and Frankie (Dettori) also gave him a glowing recommendation, so I snapped him up before anybody else moved in.”

Eight Group 1 victories later has left Buick in no doubt that joining Gosden “was the best move that I will ever make.”

He said: “John has been brilliant. He’s a great guy to work for. We always rated Nathaniel highly but he’s a horse who lives on his nerves and the fact that John knew the family so well means that he has been handled with great understanding.

“We have seen Nathaniel grow in confidence this year and he’s now a proper horse. I knew he was good, but I didn’t realise until we were pulling up after the King George just how good.“I felt so sorry for the Rewilding team, but, with Workforce drifting off to his left, Nathaniel did not really get the credit he deserved. Comment le PMU traverse-t-il la crise ?, c’est la première question qui vient à l’esprit quand on entend ce que subissent les banques les plus solides. « Le mieux possible,

à ce jour, sourit Philippe Germond. A cette fin septembre, nous sommes, sur les paris hippiques, à +4% environ, alors que nous avons bouclé les deux années précédentes à +0,4% chacune.

Cela ne nous empêche pas de bien nous tenir sur d’autres secteurs comme les paris sportifs et le poker Sur les paris sportifs, nous arrivons en troisième position avec une part de marché de 18%, et sur le poker, beaucoup de parieurs hippisme nous suivent, par confiance en notre sérieux qu’ils ont expérimenté côté course.

Nous avons mieux réussi que nous ne l’espérions sur le poker, mais notre marge de gain y est faible.

Plus 3% sur les paris hippiques, c’est une embellie quasi inespérée…Il y a de quoi être satisfait. C’est dû sans doute à la conjonction de plusieurs causes vers un même effet. D’abord, une nette amélioration de l’image de marque des courses au travers de publicités sportives avec des jockeys jouant au tennis, au rugby, bien tournées, humoristiques.

Ensuite, la diversité des jeux que nous proposons depuis plusieurs années et l’installation des paris flexis qui permettent à une nouvelle tranche de parieurs de mieux se défendre

Bien d’autres raisons secondaires s’additionnent pour constituer une raison majeure.

Notamment l’augmentation notable des points de vente, traditionnels ou non. Les traditionnels, ce sont les cafés, le plus souvent cafés-tabacs, qui continuent de constituer plus de 80% du réseau, mais il y a aussi des hyper marchés, des superettes, et des stations Total.

Et la prise de paris en ligne sur le site du PMU ? Son succès est directement lié aux horaires des

réunions. Au fur et à mesure que les cafés tabacs ferment, internet prend de l’importance. Notez que la semi-nocturne du mardi réalise un chiffre d’affaires de 50% supérieur à la nocturne car il y a davantage de points de vente ouverts D’ailleurs, on peut suivre la fermeture des cafés PMU le soir à l’augmentation progressive des enjeux internet sur

Sans aucun doute l’international, et ce dans les deux sens, c’est-à-dire ouverture des paris sur les courses françaises aux joueurs des pays où nous avons mis en place des partenariats et possibilités pour les Français de jouer sur les courses de ces pays en masse séparée ou en masse commune, et de les voir via Equidia.

L’image de marque de notre pari mutuel et des aides techniques que nous apportons aux pays avec lesquels nous sommes accordés est très forte, ce qui nous donne un gros avantage sur d’éventuels concurrents internationaux.

Nous avons ainsi des accords ou des projets plus ou moins anciens, et qui fonctionnent très bien, avec la Suisse Romande, la Belgique, la Pologne, les Etats Unis, le Maroc…

Votre objectif à moyen terme ? Il n’y a pas de raison de modifier la stratégie définie en 2009, qui a bien fonctionné.

En deux ans, les paris hippiques au PMU ont crû de plus de 4%. En paris sportifs et poker, nous sommes troisièmes, au dessus de nos espérances Nous nous soucions prioritairement du pari hippique bien entendu, et continuerons dans le sens d’une croissance saine. par le nombre de courses, l’évolution des paris, l’extension du multi, le flexi (pari demi-tarif), la diversification nouvelle des endroits de prise de paris rendue possible grâce à l’amélioration de l’image des courses.

Daniel Lahalle conducts a Q&A with the Presidentof the PMU, Philippe Germond

How is the PMU coping with the crisis? That’s the first question that springs to mind when one hears about how the major banks are suffering. “As well as possible up

to now,” smiles Philippe Germond. “Up to the end of September, betting on racing is up four percent, whereas each of the last two years ended at +0.4 percent.

“That hasn’t prevented us holding up well in other areas like sports betting and poker. On sports betting we are in third position with an 18 percent share of the market, and as for poker, a lot of horseracing punters follow us, due to the

confidence they have in our reliability, which they’ve experienced on the racing side. “We’ve succeeded better than we imagined with poker, but our margin of profit is slim. “Over three percent on racing bets, that’s an almost unhoped for improvement. We can be satisfied with this state of affairs. Without doubt, it’s due to a combination of factors. “First, a clear improvement in racing’s image in well produced, amusing advertising with jockeys playing tennis and rugby.

INGéNIEUR, diplômé de l’école Centrale Paris et titulaire d’un master de l’université de Stanford, Philippe Germond débute sa carrière en 1980 au sein du groupe Hewlett-Packard aux Etats-Unis.

En 1982, il rejoint Hewlett-Packard France, dont il devient membre du Directoire en 1990 et Directeur Général Europe du Sud en 1993. En 1995, Philippe Germond est nommé Directeur Général de SFR puis, en 1997, Président-Directeur Général de SFR GROUPE Cegetel. De 2002 à 2006, il est Directeur Général d’Alcatel, avant de rejoindre le Directoire d’Atos Origin dont il exerce la Présidence d’octobre 2007 à novembre 2008.Philippe Germond a été nommé Président-Directeur Général du PMU lors de l’Assemblée Générale du 9 avril 2009. Agé de 53 ans, Philippe Germond est marié et père de quatre filles âgées de 22 à 11 ans. Sportif, il aime le ski hors piste (est-ce bien raisonnable ?), et le golf à haut niveau (deux heures et demie pour un dix-huit trous !) C’est aussi un grand amateur d’opéra.

The traditional ones are in the cafes, most often cafe-tabacs, which continue to comprise of more than 80 percent of the network, but there are also those in hypermarkets, supermarkets and Total petrol stations.”

And online betting on the PMU website? Its success is directly linked to the time the meetings are staged, as when cafes-tabacs close the internet becomes more important.

Tuesday’s late afternoon fixture generates a 50 percent higher turnover than the night fixture because there are more points of sale open.

And we can link the progressive increase in

betting online on the PMU.fr website with the closing of PMU cafes in the evenings. What are your trump cards to maintain this progression year after year? Without a doubt the international card, in both senses – that’s to say the opening of betting on French racing to punters from countries where we’ve established a partnership and also the chance for French punters to bet on racing in these countries, and to watch them via Equidia. The image of our pari-mutual and of the technical assistance we give to countries with whom we have very strong ties, and that gives us a big advantage on any eventual international rivals.

We’ve also got older agreements and projects in place which function very well with French-

speaking Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, the United States and Morocco. Your aim in the medium term? There’s no reason to modify the strategy we laid out in 2009, one that has worked well.

In two years, betting on racing with the PMU has experienced a four percent increase. In sports betting and poker we are third, that’s higher than our expectations.

We are, of course, giving priority to racing betting and continue in the direction of a healthy growth – by the number of races, the development of bets, the extension of the multi bet, the flexi, the new diversification of places to take bets made possible by the improvement in the image of racing.

An engineer, graduate of the Ecole Centrale Paris, and holder of a masters degree from the university of Stanford, Philippe Germond began his career in 1980 with Hewlett Packard in the United States.

In 1982 he moved to Hewlett-Packard France where he became a director in 1990 and director general of southern Europe in 1993.

In 1999 he was named Director General of SFR, then in 1997 President, Director General of SFR group Cegetel.

From 2002 to 2006 he was Director General of Alcatel, before joining the management at Atos Origin where he was President between October 2007 and November 2008.

He was appointed President, director general of the PMU on April 9, 2009. Aged 53, Philippe Germond is married and the father of four daughters aged between 11 and 22.

A sportsman, he likes off-piste skiing and golf – he’s also an opera buff.

AVEC 22 concurrents au départ, le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 1979 avait réuni un lot de très haute qualité dont le doyen, âgé de 7 ans et nommé Noble Dancer présentait le caractère d’avoir déjà fini quatrième de ce grand classique trois ans plus tôt avant de poursuivre une bonne carrière en Amérique ;

c’était toutefois un pari audacieux de lui faire traverser l’Atlantique pour tenter à nouveau sa chance ce jour là.

L’éventualité d’une victoire étrangère reposait plutôt sur l’assaut massif mené par sept chevaux entraînés en Angleterre parmi lesquels le 3 ans Troy et le 4 ans Ile de Bourbon pouvaient se prévaloir d’avoir sur la même piste d’Epsom gagné l’un le Derby et l’autre la Coronation Cup chacun par 7 longueurs.

L’aîné toutefois avait connu ensuite des problèmes de santé tandis que le cadet pouvait se prévaloir d’une insolente série de six victoires dont l’une, dans les King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, avait été acquise aux dépens du très bon cheval français Gay Mécène. Ce palmarès impressionnant valait à Troy de partir favori en payant dans le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Du côté français, alors que la jument Trillion paraissait loin de son brillant passé les plus probantes chances de succès reposaient sur les deux premiers du Prix du Jockey Club Top Ville et Le Marmot, et la meilleure pouliche de l’année Three Troikas.

Avant sa victoire à Chantilly Top Ville avait gagné le Prix Lupin –les deux succès acquis en tem ps records- mais plus récemment dans le Prix Niel il s’était montré moins convaincant que Le Marmot qui au surplus s’accommodait mieux que lui des pistes souples de l’automne.

Sans une blessure à un pied qui lui avait –par un nez- coûté le Prix de Diane, Three Troikas se serait présentée invaincue dans le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe après avoir gagné toutes les autres grandes courses de son sexe, le Prix Vanteaux, la Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, les Prix Saint Alary et Vermeille, et notamment battu le record de la piste à Longchamp. Derrière Troy inapprochable favori le public exprima une légère préférence pour

THE 1979 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with 22 contenders, was a high class affair. The oldest runner was the seven year old Noble Dancer who had

finished fourth in this great classic three years earlier.

He was making an audacious second bid, crossing the Atlantic having since left Europe’s shores to continue his racing career in the United States.

The chances of a foreign raider winning, however, rested more with the seven strong assault from England. Among this group were Troy and the four year old Ile de Bourbon, respectively the winners of the Epsom Derby and the Coronation Cup, each by seven lengths.

Whilst the elder of this high class duo had subsequently suffered health issues the three year old lined up on a six-race winning run after also lifting the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. That success came at the main expense of the quality French runner, Gay Mecene.

His impressive form saw Troy start favourite. Amongst the home team, whilst Trillion’s best days appeared to be in the past, the leading chances of success lay with the first two in the Prix du Jockey Club Top Ville and Le Marmot,

and the best filly of ,her generation, Three Troikas. Before his victory at Chantilly Top Ville had won the Prix Lupin, both races in record times, but had proved less convincing in his warm-up race, the Prix Niel, than Le Marmot who was better favoured by the softer autumnal ground.

As for Three Troikas, only a foot injury which cost her victory in the Prix de Diane by a nose prevented her turning up at the Arc unbeaten, having won all the other top races for fillies during the season – the Prix Vanteaux, the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, the Prix Saint Alary and the Prix Vermeille, setting a new track record at Longchamp for good measure.

In the betting, behind the firm favourite Troy the public displayed s slight preference for Top Ville over Le Marmot with Three Troikas at 8-1 with her classy racing companion Fabulous Dancer.

Troy’s pacemaker Rivadon quickly set about doing the job he had been entrusted with, while Top Ville and Le Marmot raced in the main pack with Troy behind and Three Troikas attempting to overcome her number 17 starting position.

Down the hill and Crimson Beau made a move, taking up the running with Fabulous Dancer heading the chasing group. Troy and

Three Troikas were making up ground behind. In the straight as Northern Baby was dictating the final dash for the post from Le Marmot, Three Troikas came with a sweeping run to land the spoils by three lengths, her time just outside the record, with Le Marmot in second and Troy one length away in third.

Winning jockey Freddy Head was registering his fourth Arc success after Bon Mot, San San and Ivanjica. Only one other jockey, Jacques Doyasbere, had achieved this feat, although Pat Eddery would go on to become a member of this exclusive club.

While Freddy had stepped in to replace an injured colleague on San San, Bon Mot was trained by his grandfather, Willy, and Ivanjica by his father, Alec.

Alec Head had trained two Arc winners for Prince Aga Khan III and his son Aly, Nuccio and Saint Crespin, and two more with Ivanjica and Gold River for the Wertheimer brothers for whom, since the Derby success of Lavandin, he had enjoyed success after success.

Alec’s wife, Ghislaine, who had already seen her colours carried with distinction in the Arc by Pistol Packer, runner-up to Mill Reef in 1971, was the owner of Three Troikas.

In 1977 Alec Head decided to retire from training to concentrate on his Quesnay Stud,

Top^Ville par rapport à Le Marmot tandis qu’à 8/1 était offerte Three Troikas et son compagnon d’écurie Fabulous Dancer lui-même un poulain de bon niveau.

Rivadon , leader de Troy, s’acquitta immédiatement de sa tâche ; Top Ville, Le Marmot, Trillion galopaient au cœur du peloton, Troy plus en retrait ainsi que Three Troikas en recherche d’améliorer sa position de départ de n°17 à partir de la corde.

Pour aborder la descente on vit de façon imprévisible Crimson Beau déborder les chevaux de jeu et prendre le large tandis que Fabulous Dancer emmenait le reste du peloton ; Troy et Three Troikas s’étaient rapprochés. Au début de la ligne droite Crimson Beau lâcha prise mais Top Ville s’avoua aussi battu alors que Northern Baby entamais le sprint final devant Le Marmot.

Mais Three Troikas n’était plus loin et dans une envolée superbe elle s’imposait de 3 longueurs (à 6/10 du record de la course) devant Le Marmot qui devançait lui-même Troy d’une longueur.

Jockey de la lauréate Freddy Head signait son quatrième succès dans le grand classique après ceux acquis avec Bon Mot, San San et Ivanjica ; seul Jacques Doyasbère avait avant lui réalisé cet exploit qui sera encore ensuite égalé par Pat Eddery.

Freddy avait monté San San au pied levé pour remplacer un jockey accidenté mais Bon Mot était entraîné par son grand-père Willy et Ivanjica par son père Alec. Ce dernier qui avait sellé deux vainqueurs de l’Arc de Triomphe pour le troisième Aga Khan et son fils Aly, Nuccio et Saint Crespin, en avait ajouté deux autres avec Ivanjica et Gold River au profit de l’écurie Wertheimer que, depuis le Derby de Lavandin, il avait menée de succès en succès tout en faisant bénéficier de son savoir faire son épouse Ghislaine dont les couleurs aujourd’hui portées par Three Troikas avaient déjà brillé dans l’Arc quand Pistol Packer n’avait été battue que par le champion Mill Reef en 1971.

Alec Head avait en 1977 décidé d’abandonner

son activité d’entraîneur pour se consacrer à l’élevage dans son haras du Quesnay. Sa fille Christiane dite « Criquette » avait pris le relais et avec Three Troikas elle devenait la première femme –et la seule à ce jour- à avoir sellé un vainqueur du Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Alec Head mentor, sa femme propriétaire, sa fille entraîneur, son fils jockey : jamais la famille Head n’était montée si haut dans la gloire !

Three Troikas demeura à l’entraînement à 4 ans mais fut de nouveau affectée par des problèmes de pied provoquant de longues périodes d’absence.

Elle n’était réapparue que deux semaines avant une seconde tentative dans l’Arc de Triomphe et cela ne suffit pas pour qu’elle retrouvât toute sa qualité ; en terminant à moins d’une longueur de la lauréate Détroit elle prouva cependant que dans sa forme normale elle aurait pu égaler l’exploit de Corrida la seule de son sexe à avoir réussi l’exploit de deux victoires successives dans l’Arc.

Plus tard vendue en Amérique elle ne connut pas au haras la même réussite que sur la piste.

Three Troikas remained in training as a four year old but she suffered renewed problems with her foot and was sidelined for much of the season.

She reappeared only two weeks before a defence of her Arc crown, leaving her short of time to show all her quality.

Despite that, she still managed to finish less than a length behind Detroit proving that in her normal form she could have emulated Corrida, the only one of her sex to win successive Arcs.

Later she was sold to America where she did not enjoy the same success at stud as she had known on the racetrack.
