How can the law assist in my quest of success?
What is success? It is quite subjective but can be tabulated qualitatively and quantitatively. Arthur
Robert Ashe quoted Success is a journey not a destination. The doings are usually more important
than the outcome. Not everyone can be Number 1. From this quote, we can conclude that, the road to
success is one winding road with many bumpy rides, obstacles and challenges ahead us. We are
bound to face these sets of probabilities and difficulties which make success a fruitful and valuable
asset to each and every one of us. There is no end to success it has multiple peaks and not just one
ultimate pinnacle. One success builds another, we will always strive to achieve better. In the journey
towards success, there will be setbacks and mistakes done. These are all part and parcel of success;
through these mistakes we learn to make wiser decisions and shape a better you.
How do we attain success? What are the essences to achieve success? The first baby step to success is
VISION. Success always starts with vision. John F. Kennedy famously dreamed of putting a man on
the moon. Eleanor Roosevelt envisioned a world of equal opportunity for women and minorities.
Compelling visions can truly change the world. But staying invested in them can be extremely
difficult when hard times arrive. A vision can be used in two different ways: inspiration and
prediction. It is first used to inspire you in reaching something that you are wanting. It is also used in
prediction for changes in the future and interests you have. A vision might be the most powerful way
to keep your focused on what you want in life while keeping you motivated in achieving it. A vision
will open up your mind to many possibilities and a brighter and bigger future. When you can envision
a future that is better, happier, more productive, you are more likely to make the changes that are
necessary for you to reach that type of life.
When I was younger, I had a dream a dream of wanting to be a successful pianist and flautist. I
wanted to be play in recitals not just locally but abroad. But I was told to be realistic in this world. I
had no grudges as all my parents hoped for were a better future for me. Therefore during my younger
days, the ultimate goal of that time was to do well in examinations as it would open up doors of
opportunities. In my pre-university education, I took up Biology to make it for Medicine in University.
But I didnt like it as I was more prone to arts. After graduation, I looked deep into my future plans.
All I wanted to for myself was something which is realistic and related to my interest something of
which I will enjoy doing for a very long time. The ultimate goal was to be someone successful and
knowna brand to my name. I wanted to be influential, connected, strong and standing tall among
the rest; the most importantly I would want to contribute to the society. Just like how Steve Jobs had
changed the world in his way and definitely inspired so many. So, I wanted to be a designerrealistic

and dreamlike. I was at the crossroad of making choices; between fine arts and architecture. Alas the
choice made with envisioning the futurearchitecture.
As quoted by Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, founder of Genting Group "Once the goals have been clearly
defined, with the greatest amount of determination and hard work, one can conclusively realise
one's goals." Pure determination and hard work help us comprehend and bring us nearer to success.
Despite being clueless about the role of an architect and how can the profession change lives, the field
itself spells great and yet massive responsibility. I have always been amazed by the amount of
determination and patience both of my parents had. Mother was a school teacher turned
businesswoman; throughout the years, there had been ups and downs in the business. I had been with
her through thick and thin of her business venture, she is emotionally strong and had a clear mind with
what her doing. Even when she was almost defeated, she embraced herself and get back on her feet
and try again. I remember the years watching her working as mother-teacher-businesswoman-wife all
year round. Now looking back, at the age of 53, she is still strong willed and striving for herself as
well as the family. She always tell me that education is important as with knowledge you may explore
any horizons without fear. At the tender age of fifteen, I experienced firsthand of what she had been
through all her life. No doubt it was tedious, tiring and requires lots of effort, the sense of
achievement is there when we persevere. And for that I vowed to be strong willed and determined in
order to achieve success. Father is a great man with a substantial amount of patience. When he is
engrossed with something he enjoys doing, he is determine and patiently working with it until work is
completed. One of his teachings was be patient with what you do, and you would be amazed with the
end results. And most importantly, love what you do
The system in architecture is similar to what I had experienced, everything started from scratch on
paper and built up with determination, patience along with creativity to produce a final product that is
aesthetically presentable, functional with minimal impact on the environment. Being in the fourth year
of my tertiary studies, I am no more than only halfway into my quest of success to be the respected
architect in years to come. I am my brand. Undoubtedly, it was a winding road, but with never ending
trial and error with added perseverance had pulled me through. There were times when I feel like
giving up and was afraid of failure. And each time I was afraid, I would think of my purpose, my
vision and life lessons I gained and that gave me hope. I read upon this quote by Barack Obama which
inspired me in my quest: "Making your mark on the world is hard. If it were easy, everybody would
do it. But it's not. It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along
the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won't. It's whether you let
it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to
persevere."

Each and every failure that I went through made me stronger and ready for a bigger challenge. There
is a saying such as "Anything that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger." Thus I believe that failing
does not make me a failure, in fact it teaches me, it gives me the strength to face tougher challenges
and prepares me for the tougher parts of life that lie ahead. I had my fair share of low lying and
broken self esteem but I always believe that things happened for a reason. This made me realized
regardless to the scale of temporary failure, it is part of my life. These failures are just hitches that
gave me an opportunity to slow down, think, focus, plan and make sure that I am in the right course.
There are always times when we are doing well, sometimes too well to be true and we think that there
is no stopping us and we start to take things for granted. Then suddenly there is this shake up that
makes us realize that we are human beings and we are prone to failure and that success is never final.
This makes sure that we keep our feet firmly grounded and stay down to earth and humble in our
dealings. Therefore, keeping that in mind and embracing ourselves with renewed aspiration and
determination. Failure is one of the most important ways that can teach us how to face difficulty and
help us succeed in each and every walk of life. It should be seen as an opportunity to learn, to improve
and to better ourselves. At the same time we should make sure that none of our failures go to waste
and that we put the experience gained from it to good use for future circumstances and situations.
Failure should always be used as a stepping stone to success. I strongly believe that no one is a failure
until he or she had stopped trying. As a design undergraduate, we are trained to accept comments
harsh, subtle, constructive and destructive one. We are to persevere when a change is required but it
does not mean to totally bow down without standing firm with our design. Unless it is a weak design,
we will have to redo and yes it is frustrating but worthwhile. We learn from trial and error and make
us achieve better. Greatness is not achieved by never falling but by rising each time we fall.
Confucius.
What is my failure story? Scoring a 2.00 pointer for the heaviest credited course during my second
semester. Deduct another 0.03 and I will end up repeating second semester all again. It was then and
time to strive on-goingly for now.
Another trait to success in my choice of field is never to procrastinate. It is said that procrastination
is the thief of time. We will end up losing precious time if we succumbed to procrastinating. Like
most of the successful individuals, they work ahead of time, or the least work within a specific time
frame. The key to stay away from procrastination is to be a disciplined and strong-willed. A
disciplined person is one who knows how to manage time and make sure things are in order. Certainly
it does not spell a robotic-programmed life, but progressively keep things in order or in other words
working with a schedule. I encountered such form of disciplined life when beginning with my upper
secondary education years. I had my darkest moment of when my results plunged valley deep due to
improper teaching resources and being too accustomed to be spoon fed everything. Therefore, a dive

for change occurred, I disciplined myself to abide by time and not to procrastinate anymore. When we
do not procrastinate, there is no excuse for being unable to get a task completed on time. In my quest
of completing the second stage of the architectural degree, time management is utterly important. I
had several encounters when I regret not being control of time. It all started with thisHBP. During
my freshman years, particularly during orientation week, the student escorts told me that there is jinx
behind the abbreviation of HBPHANTU BALIK PAGI (the all nighters ghost). I am certainly living
up to the title as we work around the clock. Struggling at times to cramp and complete many task
within 24 hours. Then came the launch of Facebook back in year of 2008 which is now the most
popular social network to date as well as one of the core reasons to procrastination. The addiction was
intense but then reality slapped me in the face hard and educated me that procrastination only spells
death. I certainly do not want to ruin my success plan, which therefore led me to a cleansing ritual
and get my feet back on track. I can assure that 24 hours is definitely insufficient as we had to juggle
between assignments, class, leisure and a pitch of time for freelance work (for the extra cash).
Therefore, heeding the advice by my ex-supervisor who told me that every second lost is every
penny lost. That made me saw the value of time. Thus, working progressively with time is utterly
important. In sum, I am keeping myself closely to being discipline and not to deviate from the
permitted setback line for one core reason success. The significance of being discipline is very
important in the built environment as we are ot the sole entity. Architectural works run concurrently
with other consultants works in a project. Once a delay occurs, it is like a domino effect which end
up losing substantial funding and causes dissatisfaction from one to another. For that, Live a
disciplined, simple life. Get up early from bed to start your day. You will see prosperity coming your
way Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong.
It is too early to timeline my success when I am not there yet, but I do believe another important rule
to inculcate or instil along the journey is to never stop learning. There is no horizon or end towards
education and learning. Learningnot in the sense of being a book worm, but also includes exploring
every possibilities as much as possible. When we explore beyond our circle, we see the conjecturing
part of life; broadens our mind and thus disregarding our difference, sceptics and prejudices. The
learning process does not confine only to classroom learning but from individuals, reference materials
as well as instant happenings around the globe. This is vastly important for an architect or architect in
the making, as there are so many types of architectural style which include other peripheral nodes to
learn: structural and services, town and urban planning,, design theories and principles, materials and
spaces and more. Besides that, it also involve indirect learning processes such as the architecture of
establishing a good circle of social network, resolving language barrier and superlatively enhance
communication skills, and topping with work ethics for reputation wise. Another mode of learning is
through reference materials. My lecturers often urge us to be a proactive reader, make as muchreferences as possible as this would help us greatly throughout the design process and resolving

problems with feasible solutions. Many other senior lecturers exposed us to outdoor learning site
visit and field trips. They believed that seeing is believing. Thus, throughout the years, I cherished
every field trip be it locally or abroad as it is my opportunity to explore architectural styles from many
centuries old architecture to architecture we see now; social and cultural aspect, city planning and so
on. At the end of every trip, I yearn for more and make myself a promise that I will be back for more
not just for the fun but to learn progressively as well. In a nutshell everyday is the opportunity to learn
and gain something new.
In addition to all that the above, in my quest of success, I believe in these principles:
Be a risk taker, never turn down a great opportunitydoes not mean you have got to takerisk blindly but it is about treasuring the golden opportunity and not just let it slipped away. It
allow one to explore the hidden talent in us. Instead of losing the sole opportunity to learn,
take a bold step and risk it. Even if the outcome turned out disastrously, there is always room
for improvement.
Do what you love. We tend to excel better when we do what we love and love what we do. Itis critically important as every line and stroke expressed reflects our personality. When we do
what we love, it serves a greater chance of exploring and further developing our product. It is
call psychological motivation.
Create insanely different experiences innovation and creative ideas in the play. Its is likehow Steve Jobs sought innovation in the customer-service experience. When he first came up
with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just
moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when
you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional
connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your
customers?
As mentioned previously, it is too early to tell of my success I may not be there yet but I am
definitely closer to achieving the ultimate success than yesterday. I will definitely work hard, row
diligently down the selected course of flow. Apart from the rule trial and error and other sets of rules
in the lifes long learning process, as a postgraduate student, I am aware that the role of architect does
not only lie on building design, but also shoulders a substantial amount of responsibilities. Aside from
building design, an architect has to uphold their social and environmental responsibilities. The social
responsibility of an architect includes social welfare, creating a better place that shapes a society. We
are taught by practising architect that for every design, it should be reasoned and a good design takes
into account current issues - demographic trend, social welfare, human rights, as well as
environmental issues. I am aware that once a building is constructed, the decision is firm and

irreversible and holds a great impact onto society. On the social and safety aspect, we have to make
sure when we deliver building, the particular building has to be safe for occupation. We definitely do
not want history to repeat itself, which by all means referring to the Highland Tower tragedy back in
1993. In order to uphold these responsibilities, we require a guidelinethe law.
The meaning of law is subjective and varies from one person to another. Law is an instrument of
social change, or a means to achieve justice in the society. Law in the built environment serves as
compulsory guideline for us to adhere. The law protects and shapes the built environment as well as
the entities of it. Below are the several laws which have a direct impact on the roles and
responsibilities of an architect:
Architect Act 1967 An act to provide for the registration of architects, sole proprietorship, partnerships and bodies corporate providing architectural consultancy services, interior
designers and build draughtsmen. It is the most important document in law governing all
architects.
Uniform Building By Law 1984 (UBBL) This set of by-laws outlined the minimumrequirement for the designers and developers to create a safe occupiable building. It defines
the categories of which should be complied in order to obtain approval from the authoritie.
No person shall occupy of permit to be occupied any building or any part thereof unless a
certificate of fitness for occupation has been issued under these By-laws for such building and
any failure to comply with this by-law shall render such person liable to prosecution under
the Act)
Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974An act to amend and consolidate the laws relatingto street, drainage and building in local authority areas in Peninsular Malaysia, and for
purposes connected therewith. In simple words, this act spelt out severe penalties for
defaulting consultants for design failure. Clause 71: where any building or part of a building
fails in the course of construction or after completion etc. and such failure is due to
misconstruction or lack of proper supervision during construction; misdesign or
miscalculation or misuse the person shall be liable on convictionto fine not exceeding
RM500000 or to imprisonment for the term not exceeding 10 years or to both.
CIDB Act 1994 {Act 520}known as ACT 520 in short, this act came in force on 24 th July1994 to establish the Construction Industry Development Board as the governing boady
entrusted with the responsibility to provide effective leadership and coordination among
Construction Industry players in Malaysia.

Health and Safety Act Housing and other Planning Lawsinvolved in getting approval for project development for
people and housing.
Rule of Law or Legislation are guides for us to follow and should not be seen as limitations to the
creativity of an architect, but to make the design on paper feasible in reality. The legislative laws
mentioned clearly depict great responsibility as a consultant in the building industry. In order to bring
myself nearer to my desired success, I vow to keep on doing what I am at progressively, passionately,
diligently, boldly, responsibly and creatively. I hope in near future, I will be featured in the press
media for emerging as the brand ME.
