Du 28 au 30 juillet, dans les locaux des Nations Unies à Genève, nous avons écouté et échangé avec des experts, issus du

Pacte mondial de l’ONU et de la Chambre

de Commerce Internationale (CCI). Puis nous avons travaillé à des résolutions concrètes qui impliquent JCI dans cette lutte et cet engagement mondial.

Des questions essentielles sont posées aujourd’hui qui détermineront l’avenir de l’humain partout dans le monde. Mais quelle place l’Afrique et le Moyen-Orient, quel rôle ont-ils à jouer dans cet engagement, ce mouvement et ces actions ?

N’est-ce pas plutôt et d’abord le monde occidental et les pays émergents qui doivent agir urgemment, eux qui sont les plus grands

pollueurs de notre environnement commun ? Oui, sans doute, eux aussi doivent être actifs.

Mais quel est notre rôle à nous, membres JCI de l’Afrique et Moyen-Orient? Comment pouvons-nous être utiles et pourquoi est-il important que l’Afrique et le Moyen-Orient soient présents et soient partie prenante ici aussi ?

Pour au moins trois raisons :L’Afrique est le continent qui souffre et souffrira le plus – si on ne bouge pas – du changement climatique.Dans le processus de développement, il est nécessaire que l’Afrique tire les leçons des erreurs occidentales passées afi n d’anticiper et de se construire directement un avenir vert.JCI en Afrique et au Moyen-Orient doit faire pression et proposer des idées aux gouvernements locaux et aux entreprises venues d’ailleurs pour que celles-ci ne puissent s’autoriser en Afrique et au Moyen-Orient des pollutions inimaginables ailleurs, et ce en raison de non-règlementation ou de manque de gouvernance dans nos pays.

Le sommet représentait pour moi une occasion unique de s’imprégner du concept de changement climatique et d’avoir une vision globale sur la question ainsi que des informations précises quant aux différentes

causes de ce changement. Egalement une opportunité de rencontrer et d’échanger avec des membres JCI d’ici et d’ailleurs.

A mon avis, ce Sommet est vraiment important et je trouve qu’il n’est pas assez valorisé, je pense que négocier des partenariats pour que tous les responsables d’Organisations Nationales puissent être pris en charge par les représentations de Chambre de Commerce ou de l’ONU dans leurs pays respectifs pourrait être intéressant. De plus j’aurais souhaité qu’il il ait des «speakers» de chaque continent afi n de parler de toutes les approches car le problème est vécu différemment en fonction de l’endroit ou l’on est.

Au cours du Sommet du Leadership, j’ai beaucoup apprécié la grandeur avec laquelle des représentants de pays notamment d’Afrique confrontés à d’autres défi s prioritaires (malaria, VIH/SIDA, malnutrition) ont

qualitativement contribué dans les discussions et les résolutions au cours des ateliers. Cela prouve que tous les membres JCI développent une vision globale des problèmes du monde dans une approche intégrée. Il est urgent pour chacun d’entre nous, après avoir suivi les brillantes communications et participé aux engagements pris au cours de ce sommet, d’assurer une large vulgarisation et une forte campagne de consciensation dans nos différents pays. C’est un impérieux devoir si nous voulons garantir aux générations futures une planète vivable. Pour une planète verte, j’ai déja signé le pacte!

1 - JCI Training: Development and imple-menta" on of an Environmental Leadership program designed by JCI to train members and the wider community in areas includ-ing but not limited to teaching the causes and impacts of climate change, showing possible solu" ons and explaining how to change behavior.

2 - JCI Awards: Implementa" on of a Best Green Company Award with the possibility of looking for a partner to help measure environmental impact.

3 - JCI Events: All JCI Events adopt environ-mentally sustainable principles including but not limited to reduc" on of heat and air condi" oning, reuse of materials where possible, use of recyclable materials and innova" ve use of technology for informa-" on deployment.

4 - Green Offi cer: Every Na" onal Organi-za" on will have one individual responsible to encourage environmental and sustain-ability ini" a" ves at a local and na" onal levels.

5 - JCI Projects: Encouragement of every Na" onal and Local Organiza" on to en-gage in at least one project annually that addresses climate change under the areas of water, energy, biodiversity, transport and recycling. (Internal measures can in-clude 100% Effi ciency Award).

Maikabi Sarahtou, 2009 Africa & Middle East Best First Timer

Bonjour Sarah et merci de répondre à nos ques! ons, dont la première est de savoir quand et comment tu as rejoint la JCI ? Sarah Maikabi (SM): J’ai rejoint la JCI le 13 décembre 2008. Je ne connaissais pas son existence avant de venir au Burkina pour mes études. Un jour mon cousin, étudiant aussi dans mon université, est venu me rendre visite, et nous discu! ons lorsqu’il a reçu le message de leur Vice Président Exécu! f et a saisi l’opportunité pour me parler de l’Organisa! on. Voyant les avantages et me connaissant bien j’ai décidé de parler à mon papa qui se souciait pour moi car selon lui j’étais moins intégrée que mes sœurs. Il m’a donc encouragé à adhérer. J’ai commencé à par! ciper aux ac! vités JCI jusqu’a mon intronisa! on. Parle nous de ton expérience Jeune Chambre, en faisant ressor! r les responsabilités que tu as occupés depuis ton adhésion. SM : Je n’ai pas beaucoup d’expérience à

la JCI, compte tenu du fait qu’il n’y a pas longtemps que j’ai intégré l’organisa! on. Actuellement, j’occupe le poste de Directrice de la Commission Forma! on à la JCI Universitaire Bobo Light. Raconte nous ton expérience à la conférence de zone Afrique et Moyen Orient à Yamoussoukro. SM : Le lendemain de mon arrivée à Yamoussoukro pour la conférence de zone, j’ai pu par! ciper a la rencontre a l’inten! on des First Timers. Après avoir récupéré la fi che du First Timer, je me suis mise à la recherche des personnalités JCI qui devaient la signer. Ce# e étape, que j’avais nommée «COURSE AUX SIGNATURES», est celle qui m’a plu le plus, car j’étais la première à recevoir la signature du président mondial. Cela m’a aussi encouragée à vouloir devenir une grande personnalité dans les années à venir. L’un des amis m’a fa! guée, parce que je suis allée le voir quatre fois pour la même signature, au point que j’avais voulu renoncer. Fort heureusement, j’ai pu prendre les choses en main et j’ai su être pa! ente. Ma deuxième expérience a été le concours d’Art Oratoire où j’ai représenté le Burkina Faso et ma troisième expérience a été de par! ciper au concours de Débat.

Ce que j’ai le plus aimé à la conférence de zone à Yamoussoukro, c’est l’intégra! on entre les amis. Il n’a pas été diffi cile pour

moi de m’intégrer. J’ai été très heureuse d’avoir par! cipé à ce# e conférence, et d’avoir rencontré plusieurs personnes. Comment gères tu ton temps et tes ressources pour par! ciper aux évènements JCI, en par! culier la dernière Conférence de Zone Afrique et Moyen Orient ? SM : Pour avoir le temps de par! ciper aux ac! vités, je planifi e mes ac! vités académiques et je fais de mon mieux pour remplir mes obliga! ons le plus vite possible. Si cela nécessite de rater des devoirs, je fais une demande que je soumets à l’administra! on de l’Université.

Pour eff ec! vement par! ciper aux ac! vités, je paye généralement avec l’argent de poche que m’envoient mes parents. Pour la conférence de zone, ma par! cipa! on a été prise en charge par JCI Burkina Faso, parce que j’étais la lauréate du Concours d’Art Oratoire Na! onale. Cela a nécessité que je m’entraine a la maitrise du sujet.

La Conférence JCI Afrique et Moyen Orient qui c’est dérouler à Yamoussoukro du 20 au 23 mai 2009, c’est coroner par une soirée de gala qui avais a son programme une cérémonie de remise des récompenses aux organisa" ons na" onales, organisa" ons locales et aux membres méritants de la JCI en Afrique et Moyen Orient. I have always known if I had to be dis! nct from my peers, I needed more than the lectures I was receiving form the University. I wanted an organiza! on that empowered young people by providing them the opportunity to acquire addi! onal skills they needed to tackle both personal and professional challenges of life. I had always been reserved, shy and afraid of interac! ng and working with others.

My fi rst day at a JCI mee! ng had a profound impact that kept me coming. To my advantage, there was training on that day. The trainer’s experience in the organiza! on and the enthusiasm of the members was all I needed to conclude I was in the right place and had found what I was looking for. Not only was there a pla* orm for members

to put into prac! ce the skills they acquired, but no one was expected to do what he or she was expected to do perfectly - It is a learning by doing process they always say, and perfec! onism could only be achieved a+ er learning and doing several ! mes.

Just 8 months later, I did not only become bold and courageous to take up the challenge of being the next Vice President Individual of my Local Organiza! on, I knew a whole lot about conceiving and execu! ng projects, organizing mee! ngs, doing public presenta! ons, working as a team member and above all, planning and eff ec! vely managing one’s life goals.

It is through JCI I realized, it’s not what you do that makes you dis! nct, but how you

do what you do. It is an experience whose impact will live with me forever and not only am I diff erent and be# er, but I am also a very ac! ve young ci! zen!

National Conventions Around the CornerMost JCI Na! onal Organiza! ons the world over have already planned the dates at which they will meet to choose their leaders for the year 2010. While a few Na! onal Organiza! ons like JCI Syria chose their leaders in Syria’s principal port city of Latakia, many Na! onal Organiza! ons will have their na! onal conven! ons in the months of September and October. Na! onal Conven! ons will mark the end of one year of leadership, management, training and above all, involvement at local level to create global impacts. Here are few dates for Na! onal Conven! ons around the corner where you could have the opportunity to a# end JCI offi cial trainings as well as meet and make new friends.

CEO AcademyVarious elite acedmies exist in JCI among which the Africa & Middle East Academy and the Japan Academy.

However, other mee! ngs in the form of academies do exist and are run by dynamic and mo! vated JCI members.

In an eff ort to develop and promote rela! ons between JCI members, the ‘‘Rencontre Interna! onale des Organisa! ons Locales Membres Universitaires (RIO)’’ and the ‘‘CEO Academy’’ bring together Local Organiza! ons found in ins! tu! ons of formal learning across African countries.

This year, the 5th edi! on of RIO took

place in Niamey-Niger, bringing together delegates from 12 Local Organiza! ons and 7 Na! onal Organiza! ons, while the 2nd CEO Academy will hold in Ghana on September 14 - 20, 2009 with the aim to raise young entrepreneurs.

In 2008, the 1st edi! on of the CEO Academy held in Nigeria and this year, for 15,000 Naira (98 USD) par! cipants will discuss, exchange and get trained on Entrepreneurship Development, Business Partnership Ini! a! ves, Business planning and more topics.
