WelcomeA very warm welcome to our Spring Series at Birmingham Conservatoire. Once again we present an array of the world’s finest musicians at some of the world’s cheapest ticket prices! And, as always, there is something for everyone: our ground-breaking Frontiers Festival, our acclaimed jazz series, our Opera Triple Bill and –of course – our regular concerts and public master classes given by some of the greatest international classical musicians performing today. The piano features particularly strongly this spring with visits from our esteemed Vice President, Peter Donohoe – who took the music world by storm when he won First Prize in the 1982 International Tchaikovsky Competition - closely followed by the American pianist Jeffrey Siegel and the legendary Turkish pianist, Idil Biret, whose magnificent recordings and performances have garnered a host of awards too numerous to list here.
The Conservatoire’s feast of music continues with appearances from violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen, violist Nobuko Imai, baritone Roderick Williams and festivals devoted to the music of Schubert and Brahms. And there are so many more enticing concerts – often performed by our own superlative students. Do please delve deeply within these pages so that you don’t miss out on some truly special music making.

Enjoy a unique programme of chamber music featuring the viola. The Kegelstatt trio by Mozart is composed for a rather unusual combination of instruments, particularly for his time. Even more unusual is the fact that Mozart brings the viola to the front as a solo instrument rather than merely filling the harmonies.
Then let Brahms take you through images of wind in the trees before the Kurtag builds in six short movements around both the fairy-tale and the death of Robert Schumann.

CONSERVATOIRE DOCTORAL STUDENTS PRESENT RESEARCH-IN-PROGRESS3.30pm Arena Foyer £4 Tickets available on the door
This termly venture offers a window on the world of doctoral research. Students from varied subject backgrounds give short presentations on topics that form part of their current research enquiries. Within historical musicology, Giulia Galasso discusses the musical challenges in creating a critical edition of masses by the hitherto neglected seventeenth-century Italian composer Francesco Foggia (1603–88).
Excerpts from the first modern performances of some of Foggia’s music will be heard using Galasso’s edition. Meanwhile, the jazz researcher Michael Fletcher pursues the theme of jazz musicians’ usage of the 12-bar blues form as a testbed for new creative ideas, as well as how the blues as a common denominator may prove useful in analysing stylistic developments.

Nikolai Kapustin has achieved an international reputation through his piano writing including concertos, chamber music and notably twenty piano sonatas. In a style broadly mixing Russian lyricism and bebop jazz, his music is as eclectic as it is eccentric.
Acclaimed fourth year undergraduate pianist Guy Murgatroyd takes on four of these explosive sonatas, including two only recently published, in a recital that will test his virtuosity as well as his sense of swing!

PROFESSOR RONALD WOODLEY AND SIMON SMITH – LECTURE-RECITAL: GEORGE ANTHEIL’S VIOLIN SONATA NO.13.30pm Arena Foyer £4 Tickets available on the door
In the Parisian salons of the 1920s the extraordinary, radical music of the American expatriate George Antheil (1900–59) was, for many at the cutting-edge of the modernist aesthetic, all the latest rage. Not for nothing did he entitle his 1945 autobiography The Bad Boy of Music.
Much of his output, however – with the possible exception of the Ballet mécanique, and occasionally the Airplane Sonata for piano – is rarely heard today. Antheil’s First Violin Sonata (1923), at times utterly frenzied, at times hauntingly beautiful, presents serious challenges of interpretation to both players. Simon Smith and Ronald Woodley discuss the work, with extended performed examples, as part of their preparations for a full concert performance.

DR CLAUDIO FORCADA – GOOD VIOLIN PRACTICE: PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS RELATED TO PUPILS’ ACQUISITION OF MOTOR SKILLS3.30pm Arena Foyer £4 Tickets available on the door
This presentation discusses how motor learning can contribute to enhancing music teachers’ effectiveness and how its principles can be applied independently of the method teachers use. Initially, Dr Claudio Forcada considers the need for teachers to be systematic and have a solid background on which to base their teaching.
The characteristics of violin teachers who participated in a case study developed as part of Claudio’s doctoral thesis are analysed, exploring differences between their methods, pedagogies and approaches. Aspects of motor learning and their influence on teachers’ practice are also described. The talk concludes by showing the data collected in the case study and establishing comparisons between the teaching habits of the participating teachers.

18 November 1828, on the eve of his death Franz Schubert’s mind has been consumed by syphilis. Struggling to comprehend his mortality and the future of his own artistic legacy, he turns to madness, singing aloud Lieder of time gone by. The songs take us on a journey through his life, from his time as an inspired youth to a Bohemian in love, and finally a man devoured by temptation.
Join Expedition Arts as we raise the curtain to Birmingham Conservatoire’s Schubert Festival (from 22-26 Feb). Featuring many of his Lieder, this new piece of theatre promises to bring this prolific composer to life like never before.

Birmingham Conservatoire presents a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the music of one of the greatest musical figures in history.
With some five concerts each day, students and staff explore the diverse richness of Schubert’s music including well known chamber music favourites such as the Trout Quintet, Death and the Maiden, Rosamunde and Octet in F Major as well as piano trios, string quartets and many rarities.
Music for the piano (for both two and four hands!) permeates the week, the acclaimed Schubert interpreter Christian Blackshaw (see over) joins us to give a recital and the late Piano Sonatas are performed in three 'late night' concerts.
Schubert’s glorious vocal music is presented by students in a Liederabend as well as performances of his two song cycles Die Schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, which brings this remarkable week to a fitting close.

PROFESSOR MICHAEL RUSS – MUSORGSKY'S PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION AND THE SUBJECT OF ART IN MUSIC3.30pm Arena Foyer £4 Tickets available on the door
Professor Michael Russ, Emeritus Dean of Music, Humanities and Media at the University of Huddersfield, brings his substantial expertise on Musorgsky to address issues surrounding the iconic and highly individual Pictures at an Exhibition (1874), not least the remarkably under-researched subject of art in music.
The rhetorical device of ‘ekphrasis’, the vivid description of a work of art in another medium – usually poetry – emerges as a useful starting point. The seminar is illustrated with art works from Hartmann (the subject of Musorgsky's composition) and others, together with recordings of performances of the original score and a few of its many transcriptions.

Vaughan Williams Riders To The Sea Holst Savitri Ravel L’enfant et les sortilèges
Join us for scenes from three well-loved operas. Riders to the Sea (1932) by Vaughan Williams uses a play by J.M. Synge in which a mother learns that her last remaining son of six has, like the others, been lost to the sea. It tells of loss and resignation and the sea features throughout the music like an unseen character.
Savitri (1916) by Gustav Holst, based on an episode from Sanskrit literature in which a wife persuades Death not to take her husband. It tells of the triumph of love over death.
L'Enfant et les Sortileges (1925) by Ravel, based on Colette's libretto is a fairy tale in which the furniture, cup and saucer clock, story book, fire, wallpaper and maths book all come to life to seek revenge on the naughty boy who has misused them. He escapes to the garden where the trees, cats, squirrels, bats and dragonfly all continue the nightmare. It is utterly magical and really is about the love between child and parent.

PROFESSOR REBECCA HERISSONE – ‘A COMPLETE AND CORRECT SCORE’: MUSIC PRINTING AND CREATIVITY IN LATE SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND3.30pm Arena Foyer £4 Tickets available on the door
This presentation investigates how detailed textual study of Restoration printed music challenges our longstanding association of publication with the notion of textual fixity. Using examples from Purcell’s music, Professor Rebecca Herissone, from the University of Manchester, demonstrates how music printing can preserve creativity in unexpected ways, with significant implications for today’s performers. The talk focuses on handwritten corrections to Purcell’s self-published score of his 1691 opera The Prophetess, or the History of Dioclesian.

LEARNING AND PARTICIPATION PROGRAMME It is the vision of Birmingham Conservatoire to lead and inspire musicians of all ages and abilities on their musical journeys. We are an institution ready to collaborate, innovate and create exciting new opportunities for all musicians. If you have an idea for a possible collaboration please contact Richard Shrewsbury, Learning and Participation Manager.
INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCES AND SIDE-BY-SIDEBirmingham Conservatoire has ensembles that are experienced in performing in educational settings. These ensembles range from a chamber orchestra, through woodwind, brass, percussion and string ensembles to world music ensembles, including a samba band and the Conservatoire Folk Ensemble led by Joe Broughton. If you are interested in a Conservatoire group coming and working alongside your musicians get in touch. The Conservatoire can support these activities and will actively look to find ways to make joint activities financially achievable.
TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS We offer a wide range of in-school workshop opportunities with our students and staff to enhance your curriculum. Our workshops range from composition and creative ensemble workshops to specific instrumental workshops or interactive performances in school. There is also the opportunity for school groups to visit the Conservatoire to enjoy our programme of over 300 concerts each academic year.
YOUNG PEOPLE – ASPIRE PROGRAMMEThe new Birmingham Conservatoire Aspire programme is for young musicians who show a desire to pursue a musical career. If you are, or know of, a young person that would benefit from an enhanced experience of musical learning activities, including one-to-one instrumental lessons, side-by-side rehearsals and mentoring, then please get in touch.
