    John 6:5-13 (New International Version)

5When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said toPhilip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" 6He asked this only totest him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

7Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages[a] would not buy enough bread foreach one to have a bite!"

8Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 9"Here is aboy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they goamong so many?"

10Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in thatplace, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. 11Jesus then took theloaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as theywanted. He did the same with the fish.

12When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the

pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."

    13

So they gathered them andfilled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by thosewho had eaten.

Okay so what in the story was extraordinary? What was special about thisdinner? (Take responses.)

Today, we are gong to talk about being scared in an adventure. Sometimes, adventures are scary. Listen to this story and see if you would be scared if youwere one of the disciples.

    Matthew 8:23-27 (New International Version)

    Jesus Calms the Storm

23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24Without warning, afurious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. ButJesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us!We're going to drown!"

26He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up andrebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the windsand the waves obey him!"

If you were one of the disciples, would you feel scared? Why or why not? (Takeresponses.)

I would be scared if I was in a small boat and there was a storm. But I wouldhave been really amazed if Jesus talked to the storm and it stopped. Howamazing. Jesus helps us with our fear.
