« Cézanne 2006 » centenary - Aix en Provence 9 June 2006 – 17 September 2006

To celebrate the centenary of Paul Cézanne’s death, the city of Aix-en-Provence is preparing “Cézanne in Provence,” an exhibition of 120 of his major works, including practically all of his Provençal works. Born in 1839 in Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne divided his time between his native city and the Ile-de-France (Paris, Pontoise, Auvers-sur-Oise), and spent the end of his life near his beloved Sainte Victoire. Visitors who would like to go beyond the exhibition and view the landscapes through Cézanne’s eye can go to some of his favourite sites near the museum: the Jas de Bouffon, specially opened for the occasion, the Lauves studio, the Bibémus quarry and the Sainte Victoire Mountain Though his work gained recognition late, Paul Cézanne holds an essential place in the history of painting by the influence he exerted on the Cubist movement, and he is often considered “the” painter of Modern painting. « Cézanne 2006 » is thus a very special event for art amateurs – a perfect opportunity to discover Provence and its beautiful landscapes. For Paul Cézanne enthusiasts, we suggest an extension of the trip to Paris and the Ile-de-France, where he lived and where many of his works can be seen. Easily accessible by the TGV train, near the Marseille-Provence airport, offering a large selection of quality accommodation, Aix-en-Provence has many attractions : The Old Town, Provençal landscapes, special events like the prestigious summer Festival of Lyrical Arts, the nearby Mediterranean Sea, colourful markets, etc. Discover our special programme « Cézanne 2006 » and reserve quickly ! Your special requests are welcome

Our programme

Day 1 Aix-en-Provence, a visit on foot Arrival in Aix-en-Provence in the afternoon, meet your guide. Walk through the little streets of old Aix to see the areas where Cézanne lived: his birthplace and the apartments where he lived, his father’s hat shop and bank, his schools including the drawing school where he took lessons and associated with Emile Zola, the cafés in the Cours Mirabeau, etc. Accommodation in a carefully selected hotel and dinner.

Day 2 Cézanne 2006 – Cézanne’s landscapes In the morning, visit the Cézanne Exhibition at the Granet Museum. Specially renovated, located in the former priory of the Knights of Malta, the Granet Museum, which owes its name to Cézanne, is presenting 120 of his oil and aquarelle paintings, in conjunction with the National Gallery of Art of Washington, DC. In the afternoon, we will leave the canvases behind in favour of a pictorial path through his landscapes and sources of inspiration around Aix: the 18th century family property, the Jas de Bouffon, where the painter spent 40 years of his life and which is specially open to the public for the exhibition, the Lauves studio, the Bibémus quarry, the Chateau Noir and the Tholonet. The master’s favourite subject is unquestionably the Montagne Sainte Victoire about which the painter said: “Look at this Sainte Victoire. What passion, what imperious thirst for the sun, and what sadness in the evening when the dullness falls upon it…” Return to Aix-en-Provence, dinner and hotel.

Day 3 To continue… This little excursion into Cézanne’s country can stop here for those who prefer a short visit, or continue : By a trip into Provence or to the Riviera in search of other painters of light or Mediterranean landscapes: Van Gogh in Arles, Matisse and Picasso on the Riviera (see our programmes “Retracing the footsteps of Matisse,” “The Picasso trail”) Or For those who would like to discover other aspects of Cézanne’s life, why not follow him to Paris and the Ile-de-France … Paris : Musée d’Orsay Arrival in Paris (TGV from Aix-en-Provence to Paris in 3 hours) Visit the Musée d’Orsay and its extraordinary collections covering works of art created primarily between 1848 and 1914, highlighted by the exceptional quality of light and setting of the former Orsay train station. We will focus on Paul Cézanne’s contemporaries and those whom he influenced. The visit will take us near the Pont Neuf where the Academy of Charles Suisse was located: when Cézanne came to Paris, he often went there and thus met Pissarro and Guillaumin. To the hotel in Paris, dinner: free time.

Day 4 On the trail of the Impressionists in the Ile-de-France In Médan, we will visit the house where Emile Zola lived for 24 years, and where much of his writing was done. Zola had been a friend of Cézanne’s since childhood, and introduced him to many Parisian artists and fought battles in official painting circles for the Impressionists. But as early as this period, he started to appreciate Cézanne’s painting less. The close bond between them disintegrated and when E. Zola created the character of the artist, Charles Lantier, a failed painter, he based it on Cézanne. The painter was deeply hurt by this thinly disguised resemblance, and the two men stopped associating.

Next stop, Pontoise where Cézanne joined Camille Pissarro in 1872 with Hortense Fiquet, his model who had become his companion, and his son, Paul. This is where Cézanne decided to follow Pissarro’s example and leave the studio behind to concentrate on landscapes and motifs. The Pissarro Museum is dedicated to its namesake but also presents works of his contemporaries. Finally, in Auvers-sur-Oise, where Cézanne lived and worked with Van Gogh, we will visit the Impressionists’ Trail to better understand the painter and the century of the Impressionists. We will begin to see the difficulty the movement encountered, Cézanne, being the one who attracted the most resistance, was only recognized very late.
