1. Important information
Specialist knowledge required. The installation time is at least 4.0 hours, but may vary depending on the condition of the car and the equipment in it.
Target groupThe towing hitch installation kit may only be installed by a BMW dealership, which is the only place to have theappropriately trained personnel with the necessary tools and equipment.
Safety instructionsBMW cannot accept any liability for damage caused by ignoring the work and the safety instructions set out in this document. In addition, if the accessory is not installed and handled properly as set out in these installationinstructions, no claims under the guarantee will be accepted by BMW AG.
Electrical cables are to be installed in such a way that they cannot be damaged from kinking, chafing orcrushing.
Installation instructionsThe installation work is shown for a LHD model. For an RHD model, the installation is to be completed the opposite way round.
Keep to the tightening torque values for screw connections. The required tightening torque values are listed in the parts information system (TIS).If the specified PIN slots are already in use, bridges, double crimps or parallel end stops are to be used.Under no circumstances should you use so-called "Scotchlock connectors" since they may cause faults in thevehicle's electrical system. The body sealant and underseal is to be removed from all body support areas for the towing hitch. The areas must then be cleaned with benzene. Coat bare body areas with anti-corrosion paint. The maximum trailer load is given in the car’s registration document. The care and maintenance instructions are described in the instructions for use for the towing hitch.Deburr the edges of all drilled holes and coat them with anti-corrosion paint. Remove all chippings. An additional cover for the bumper is required to cover the cut-out in the bumper. This cover must be orderedseparately.
Screw union instructionsPosition all bolts and nuts by hand and initially only tighten them by hand.Align the towing hitch and holder for the ball head.Tighten the bolts and nuts in the following sequence:
1. Collar nuts for the towing hitch / rear bulkhead2. Hexagonal bolts, size M10, side supports / boot

2.3 Towing hitch installation
Fold out folded page 2-27
Before the installation of the towing hitch take all the protective stoppers off the welded nuts on the towing hitch.
ADrill holes with a diameter of 14 mm on both the left-hand and right-hand side members (1) at the marked positions. If the drilling positions are not marked, both side members must be marked as shown in the illustration. The illustration shows the left-hand side member. Proceed accordingly for the right-hand side member.
BBefore the installation of the longitudinal supports (4), glue the foam ring (2) over the impact absorber opening (3).Push the left-hand longitudinal support (4) and the right-hand longitudinal support into the impact absorberopening (3).
There are three holes on the left-hand longitudinal support (4) in the mounting plate for the impact absorber. The right-hand longitudinal support also has holes in the mounting plate for the impact absorber.
CTighten the two longitudinal supports on the side members by hand using the hexagonal bolts (5) and washers.
DMark the hole (7) on the rear bulkhead on the installed right-hand longitudinal support (6). Remove the longitudinalsupport and drill a hole with a diameter of 14 mm. Install the longitudinal support again.
coupé only:Drill a hole (8) with a diameter of 33 mm for the additional wiring harness as shown in the illustration on the right-hand side next to the passage for the registration plate light.
EPlace the towing hitch (d) against the rear bulkhead. Insert the hexagonal bolts (9) with washers (10). Align thetowing hitch (d) and tighten the hexagonal bolts (9) by hand.First tighten the bolts on the towing hitch (d), then secure the longitudinal supports (see Figure C).The tighteningtorque is 60 Nm.
F
If there are no adjustment bushes (11) for adjusting the height of the bumper in the towing hitch, the adjustment bushes (11) from the old impact absorbers must be refitted.
Place the holder (12) for the vibration absorber (13) against the assembled towing hitch (d). Secure the holder (12)with the hexagonal bolts (14), washers (15) and hexagonal nuts (18). Push the vibration absorber (13) into the holder (12) and secure it with toothed washers (17) and hexagonal nuts (18).
coupé onlyDo not install the vibration absorber (13) or its holder. Secure the adjustment bushes (11) with hexagonal bolts (14),washers (15) and hexagonal nuts (16).

2.4 Additional wiring harness installation
Fold out folded page 2-37
Aroadster onlyMark the boot floor (1) as shown in the illustration and drill a hole with a diameter of 33 mm for the additionalwiring harness.
Ensure that when you drill the hole, the bracket beneath for the exhaust system is not damaged.
BInsert the additional wiring harness (a) through the hole (2) and fit the rubber grommet (3) into the hole (2).
The rubber grommet must sit securely in the hole to prevent the ingress of water. If necessary, seal it with silicon.
coupé onlyThe hole (2) is to the side of the cable passage to the registration plate light.
CLay the additional wiring harness a along the vehicle wiring harness to the tail lights.Connect branch A6, black 8-pin plug casing, to the black 8-pin socket casing X319 (4) on the left-hand tail light.Connect branch A7, black 8-pin socket casing, to the tail light E46.Connect branch A3, white 1-pin plug casing, to branch B2, white 1-pin socket casing, on additional wiring harness b.Connect branches A1 and A2 to the right-hand tail light in the same way as you connected A7 and A6 to the left-hand tail light.
DLay additional wiring harness b along the vehicle wiring harness, on the right-hand side of the car, to the installation site of the battery.Cut branch B1, red cable, to the correct length. Crimp on a connection plug, insert it into the fuse holder C1and secure it.Connect branch C2 to the battery positive pole.
The illustration shows a car with the battery in the engine compartment. Proceed accordingly for cars with a battery in the boot.
EConnect branch A8, brown/white cable, and branch A9, brown cable, to the ground post X13015 (5) on the left-hand side member.
FConnect branch A5, 13-pin trailer plug X630, to the trailer socket casing (6).Connect branch A4, green 2-pin socket casing, to the separate mounting of the trailer socket casing (6).Secure the entire trailer socket to the towing hitch using the enclosed slot bolts (7) and self-locking nuts (8).
