Indeed, the impact of large-scale integration of wind and solar power on the South African and Tunisian grids is of significant interest and must be investigated thoroughly. Wind and solar power plants are connected to the grid through power converters that perform basic functions such as feeding the main grid, and also advanced functions to support the grid. The presence of active converters introduces new dynamics and harmonic issues, but also presents interesting possibilities for mitigating the effects of classical power quality (PQ) problems through the control of converters. The purpose of this collaborative project is to perform simulation and experimentation-based investigations in order to study the impact of wind systems on the grid and impact of power quality issues on wind systems. This will be done by upgrading the existing laboratory facilities at both universities, UCT and UTM- ENIT, to study transient and steady state operation of wind systems. These laboratory facilities, at UCT and UTM, present an unique opportunity to conduct world-class experimental research on the impact of large scale penetration of renewable energy and power from independent power producers into the South Africa and Tunisian grids.

Generator Test Platform for Assessing the Impact of Renewable Energy Integration and Power Quality Issues

The large-scale integration of renewable energy is a big challenge to face by South Africa (SA) and Tunisia.

This will be done by upgrading the existing laboratory facilities at both universities, UCT and UTM-ENIT, to study transient and steady state operation of wind systems. These laboratory facilities, at UCT and UTM, present an unique opportunity to conduct world-class experimental research on the impact of large scale penetration of renewable energy and power from independent power producers into the South Africa and Tunisian grids.
