Traduction : A. Rabin-Weller

B. den Minimalismus vorwegnah-men.

PrefaceThroughout his entire life Erik Satie (1866 –1925) was known as an enfant terrible andoutsider. Right from the beginning of his artis-tic career he did not succumb to the traditionsof the 19th century. Due to his open-minded-ness towards all kind of styles including“lightweight” popular music, he developed astyle that pointed ahead to later trends such asfor instance minimal music. His musical lan-guage was opposed to the rich and flowerystyle of the romantic period and while ignor-ing the laws of climax and anti-climax hiscompositions were based upon the principleof juxtaposing separate equal parts.

The Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes forpiano belong to Satie’s early works and are hismost well known. The Gymnopedies refer todance festivities of naked boys (gymnos =naked; paidos = boy) from ancient Sparta.Ritualistic dances from the town of Knossoson the other hand initiated the Gnossiennes. These are musically closely related to theGymnopedies. The juxtaposition and repeti-tion of small phrases creates a meditativecharacter that is underpinned by the Greek-oriental modal harmonies and also by theomission of bar lines (Gnossienne no. 3).

In consideration of Satie’s basic approach ofusing ancient models, an arrangement forstring instrument and flute is not that farfetched as it may appear. This arrangementwill hopefully make the distinctiveness ofSatie’s music all the more apparent.
