belied by the vast amount of evidence in

the book about the disintegrating esprit decorps within the army, let alone the fact

that the very basis of ‘French Algeria’ wasa legal distinction between two ‘commu-

nities’. Soldats en Algerie is, nevertheless,

an invaluable source of material and asignificant contribution to knowledge

milieux intellectuels ou avec les medias;

. . ?Les quatre premiers chapitres s’achar-

nent a demystifier de nombreux prejugesou de parti pris de journalistes, de

commentateurs, ou de chercheurs. Lepremier chapitre offre une lecture

nuancee du theme du renouveau de la

question sociale en France depuis lesannees 1990.

L. Mathieu

demontre ainsi le jeu complexe de ces

rapports. Le quatrieme chapitre porte

sur le « decrochage » entre les mouve-

ments sociaux et la politique institu-

tionnelle. Comme ailleurs dans ce livre,

L. Mathieu cherche a nuancer certaines

ments sociaux. Cet ouvrage excellent va

faire grandir la reputation, deja solide, de

L. Mathieu.

Syntactic Borrowing in ContemporaryFrench. A Linguistic Analysis of NewsTranslationM. MCLAUGHLIN

Oxford, Legenda, 2011148 pp., £40.00, ISBN 978 19065 40661

One of the fascinating things about

studying French is the cloak of purity

that, for many of its speakers, continues

to envelop it. This myth or imaginaire is

connected with the language’s totemic

status, so that, as one scholar has

suggested, it symbolises the nation as

does the Royal Family for many British

people. Alongside this myth runs the

reality that sees French borrowing from

languages as much as any other. Any

Gallicist will be aware of the fuss that

franglais provokes, and the borrowing of

even one sound—the consonant of the –

ing words imported into French—has

caused many a phonetician’s ink to flow.Syntactic borrowing is of interest

because it concerns the basic armature

of the language unlike lexis, which is

relatively superficial and open-ended.

Some syntactic sequences that abut with

lexis are more easily borrowable; for

instance, en charge de, seemingly calqued

from English, seems on the increase. But

the structures studied in this volume,

adjective position, the passive voice and

verbal –ant forms, as in ajoutant que

from ‘adding that’, have deeper roots and
