bénéficient avantageusement les coteaux escarpés ;

geben. Die UNESCO unterteilt die Gesamtheit

der im Welterbe aufgenommenen Güter in

3 Hauptkategorien: natürliche, erbaute und

kulturelle Landschaften. Lavaux ist eine

kulturelle Landschaft, wo menschliches

Wirken zur Schaffung eines aussergewöhn-

lichen Gebietes beigetragen hat.

Patrimony is the legacy of the past, which

we enjoy today and pass on to future gene-

rations. UNESCO divides its listed World

Heritage sites into 3 main categories:

natural sites, constructed sites and cultural

landscapes. Lavaux constitutes a cultural

landscape, where human actions have

contributed to shaping an exceptional area.

dient weltweite Anerkennung.

UNESCO sets criteria, which allow a site

to be considered as being of universal

value. Lavaux is a prominent example of

a type of landscape that conveys a history

of habitation and the type of traditional

human settlement and land occupation

that is representative of a culture. In these

respects, Lavaux is exceptional and universal

and deserves to be recognised on a global

scale.

nement.

Schon im 11. Jahrhundert kultivierten

Mönche hier die Weinberge auf engen,

von Steinmauern gestützten Terrassen.

Seither haben Generationen von traditions-

bewussten Winzern dieses einzigartige

Mosaik bewirtschaftet und gestaltet, das

sich auf ungefähr 40 km in Hanglage längs

des Genfersees erstreckt. Diese Kultur-

landschaft, zu der auch 14 gut erhaltene

Dörfer gehören, stellt eines der grössten

Weinanbaugebiete der Schweiz dar. Man

hat Evolution und Weiterentwicklung

über nahezu 1’000 Jahre praktisch vor

Augen, das Ergebnis eines ausgeglichenen

Zusammenspiels zwischen Bewohnern und

ihrer Umgebung.

In the 11th Century, monks already grew

vines on the narrow terraces, supported

by stone walls. Since then, generations

of winemakers have been respectful of

traditions and have helped to foster this

magnificent mosaic, which covers some

40 km of slopes stretching along the shores

of Lake Geneva. This cultural landscape

constitutes Switzerland’s largest vineyards

and includes 14 well-preserved villages.

It displays its evolution and development

over almost 1,000 years in a striking way,

thanks to a balanced interaction between

the inhabitants and their environment.

Lavaux, vignoble en terrasses

Lavaux, Weinberg-Terrassen

Lavaux, Vineyard Terraces

gerichten.

The king of Lavaux, the Chasselas, is a

typically Swiss grape variety, even though

it is also used in the production of wine in

Alsace, Savoy and Burgundy. The Chas-

selas grape originates most probably from

Lavaux, where its oldest traces can be

found. It was originally named Fendant or

Luzannois (taken from the name of the city

of Lausanne).

With a subtle aroma, the Chasselas per-

meates the soil in a unique way, wherever

it is planted. Wines can, therefore, vary

considerably, depending on which region

they are from. Generally, it is a sparkling

and fruity wine, with nice mineral overtones

and a pleasant freshness. It is ideal as an

aperitif, as well as with dishes such as fish

or cheeses.

Lavaux lies in the Canton of Vaud, at the

heart of French-speaking Switzerland.

These vineyard terraces of 830 hectares

cover the vertiginous shores of Lake Geneva

between Montreux and Lausanne, offering

one of the most beautiful panoramas in the

world. The vineyards terrain, with its steep

slopes, gives it a characteristic identity and

makes the wines of Lavaux unique: with a

very typical character, discernible to the

taster through their persistence, strength

and harmony of aromas and flavours. The

soil comes from a natural moraine, with a

varied content of clay, limestone and a va-

riety of minerals contributing to its diversity.

The vine is the gold of Lavaux, where

tradition, the love of wine and the soil,

combined with an exceptional exposure

to sunshine, ensure its reputation for suc-

cessful vintages, year after year.

L’histoire Die Geschichte The History

Eiszeit

und geologische Veränderungen, aber auch

Menschenhand waren und sind an seiner

Entstehung beteiligt. Es waren Mönche,

die sich zuerst diese besondere Steillage

zu Nutze machten, dann kamen die Winzer.

Unermüdlich schafften sie mit ihrem

Wissen und Können für die Bewohner die

Grundlage zur Bewirtschaftung.

Lavaux as we see and know it today has

evolved over time, enduring glacial periods

and geological changes as well as being

strengthened by man’s intervention. Trying

to preserve and make the most of these

particular slopes, first the monks and then

the winemakers used all their know-how,

in order to make of this area a site that

could be used by its inhabitants.

sanne, plusieurs couvents entreprennent

de défricher les collines pour cultiver la

vigne.

valeur universelle.

Die Landschaft des Lavaux entstand in der

letzten Eiszeit (13’000 vor J-C). Die vom

Rhonegletscher stammenden Moränen

formten die steilen Hänge, die allmählich

von Vegetation bedeckt wurden. Die extreme

Hanglage (von 15 bis 100%) macht es

unmöglich, hier Landwirtschaft zu betreiben.

Doch ab dem 12. Jahrhundert nach einer

Schenkung des Königs von Burgund an den

Bischof von Lausanne beginnen Mönche

einiger Klöster mit der Rodung der Hänge,

um hier Weinreben anzubauen. Dies ist der

Beginn einer langen Weinbaugeschichte.

Immer mehr Mauern entstehen, Terrassen,

um den Boden abzustützen und zu ebnen.

Und Ordensmänner delegieren die Kultur

an Weltliche, die sich um Pflanzen und

Mauern kümmern, sie hegen und pflegen.

Einige der heutigen Winzer sind direkte

Nachfahren dieser ersten Weinbauer, seit

mehr als 17 Generationen widmen sie sich

mit Liebe den Weinstöcken. Am 28. Juni

2007 wird Lavaux offiziell in das UNESCO

Welterbe aufgenommen. Im Laufe der Zeit

von menschlicher Hand gestaltet entsteht

aus der Umgebung mit Weinstockterrassen

und typischen Dörfern das Lavaux, ein

Gebiet von universellem Wert.

The landscape of Lavaux was formed

during the last glacial period (13,000 BC).

The moraines left behind by the Rhone

glacier sculpted the steep hills, which then

became covered in vegetation. The sheer

slope of the hillsides (from 15 to 100%)

makes the land unsuitable for farming.

However, from the 12th Century, following

the gift from the King of Burgundy to the

Bishop of Lausanne, several monasteries

undertook to clear the hillsides and culti-

vate vines. It was the beginning of the local

wine-producing saga... The monks built

continuous walls, forming terraces, in order

to support and level the ground.

Eventually, cultivation was handed over to

the laymen who looked after the plants

and low walls. Thus, some of today’s

wine-makers are direct descendants of

the first vintners, continuing their love of

the vine for more than 17 generations. On

28th June 2007, Lavaux was officially listed

as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shaped

over time by man, this landscape, com-

posed of vineyard terraces and typical

villages, enabled Lavaux to be considered

as a site of universal value.

lagerplätze in Lausanne-Vidy). Der Wald

wird gerodet, es entstehen kleine Dörfer,

vor allem am Seeufer.

It was during the Neolithic period (5500-

2200 BC) that farming and rearing livestock

developed (first homes and hunting camps

in Lausanne-Vidy). The forest was cleared,

villages were established in the area, parti-

cularly along the lake shore.

Jahr-

hundert Schritt für Schritt. Tagelöhner werden

angeheuert für den Bau der „charmus“, an

den Steilhängen errichteten Terrassen.

Lavaux was established little by little from

the 11th Century thanks to donations made

to the Bishops of Lausanne who asked the

winemaker-piece-workers to construct

“charmus”, terraces built on the hillside.

urbanistique.

Die Winzer mussten in den vergangenen

zwei Jahrhunderten einiges einstecken,

es gab Krankheiten (wie die Reblaus),

die internationale Krisenzeit der Überpro-

duktion, Weinimporte und den Druck städt-

ischer Gebiete.

Over the last two centuries, the winemakers

have had to face numerous challenges

such as diseases (like phylloxera), the interna-

tional winemakers’ crisis of overproduction,

imports and pressure from urban-planners.

Die Rebstockterrassen von Lavaux sind

Quelle der Inspiration für Künstler aller mög-

lichen Gattungen. Ihre privilegierte Lage,

die Veränderungen durch Wind, Wetter,

Klima und Jahreszeiten verleihen diesem

Fleckchen Erde etwas sehr Anziehendes für

die hier gastierende Maler, Musiker, Filme-

macher, Schriftsteller, etc.

The vineyard terraces of Lavaux have been

a great source of inspiration for many

artists of all persuasions and disciplines. Its

privileged location and unique sceneries,

forever being changed by nature and the

atmosphere, breathe new life into this

corner of the world and into its guests, pain-

ters, musicians, filmmakers, writers, etc.

Lavaux s’impose très vite aux photo-

graphes. Dès le XIXe siècle, ils s’emparent

naturellement du sujet, mettant leur art à

servir tant ce paysage remarquable que

ses habitants.

Sehr schnell entdecken auch die Fotogra-

fen das Lavaux. Ab dem 19. Jahrhundert

wird es zum begehrten Objekt, ihre Kunst

ehrt die bemerkenswerte Landschaft

gleichermassen wie deren Bewohner.

Photographers quickly established them-

selves in Lavaux. From the 19th Century,

they have naturally embraced the subject,

devoting their art as much to the remar-

kable countryside as to its inhabitants.

Chabrol.

Als Kulisse für Hollywoodfilme, gelobt und

auch bis ins kleinste Detail durchleuchtet,

war das Lavaux als berauschende Land-

schaft zwischen See und Alpen Schauplatz

von Spiel- und Kurzfilmen, wie z.B. „Lady L“

(1965) von Peter Ustinov oder „Merci pour

le Chocolat“ (2000) von Claude Chabrol.

A place that can either be like Hollywood,

or simply glorified, examined, Lavaux has

provided the setting for long and short films,

highlighting the scenery between the lake

and the Alps. These include “Lady L” (1965)

by Peter Ustinov or “Thank you for the cho-

colate” (2000) by Claude Chabrol.

Les écrivains s’approprient Lavaux dès

le XVIIIe siècle. Rousseau et Lord Byron

s’extasieront devant le concert des vignes

et de l’eau. Mais parmi les voix qui ont

chanté la région, celle du Vaudois Charles

Ferdinand Ramuz est majeure.

Schon ab dem 18. Jahrhundert treffen die

Schriftsteller ein. Rousseau und Lord Byron

sind völlig hingerissen vom Anblick der

Reben und des Wassers. Doch von allen

Stimmen, welche die Region besungen

haben, ist und bleibt die des Waadtländers

Charles Ferdinand Ramuz die grösste.

Writers have been coming to Lavaux

since the 18th Century. Rousseau and Lord

Byron were thrilled by the spectacle of the

vineyards and the lake. Among the voices

that sang the region's praises, Vaud’s

Charles Ferdinand Ramuz was a major one.

Terre d’accueil de plusieurs artistes célèbres

(pianistes, violonistes, chefs d’orchestre),

Vignerons.

Viele berühmte Künstler (Pianisten, Geiger,

Dirigenten) wie Jean Villard-Gilles gaben

hier schon ein Gastspiel; das Lavaux ist

auch Schauplatz mehrerer Festivals (wie

das Cully Jazz) und des Winzerfests.

A region welcoming many famous artists

(pianists, violinists, conductors), such as

Jean Villard-Gilles, Lavaux is also the home

of several festivals like the Cully Jazz and

the Winegrowers’ Festival.

meilleur.

Alle 25 Jahre, vier mal in einem Jahr-

hundert, findet in Vevey das Winzerfest

statt.

Zukunft.

Four times every Century, Vevey hosts the

Winegrowers’ Festival. A whole population

joins together in song to celebrate the

region’s love for wine growing, for their

roots and hopes for a better future.

From the end of the 18th Century, Vaud’s

Riviera has attracted travellers. Painters

then offered them their sketches, water-

colours and prints. The movement was

launched and painters would never again

put down their brushes.

naturels.

Mit idealem Klima und optimaler Sonnen-

einstrahlung beherbergt das Lavaux eine

besonders interessante Fauna und Flora.

Verschiedene Wasserläufe nähren den Boden

auf perfekte Art für das Wachstum der

Reben. Die Rebstockterrassen sind durch

ihr äusseres Erscheinungsbild von atem-

beraubender Schönheit, doch das Lavaux

ist auch in seinen kleinsten natürlichen

Details wunderbar ausgeglichen und von

tiefgründiger Schönheit.

Strengthened by its ideal climate and

optimal hours of sunshine, Lavaux has a

particularly interesting flora and fauna.

Several waterways feed the land making it

ideal for successfully growing vines. Dazz-

ling with splendour, thanks to their scenic

vineyard terraces, Lavaux displays a true

balance radiating a profound beauty, down

to the finest natural detail.

A Lavaux, l’homme a « exploité » la géogra-

phie du lieu en accentuant les mouvements

des terrasses naturelles et en façonnant

le relief. Un « territoire-terroir » s’est ainsi

formé, auquel les habitants s’identifient

pleinement.

akzentuiert. Es entstand das „Territorium-

Terroir“, mit dem sich die Einwohner voll

und ganz identifizieren.

In Lavaux, man “exploited” the area’s geo-

graphy by developing the naturally present

terraces and by shaping the terrain. A

“working landscape” thereby came into

being, with which its inhabitants identify

fully.

Das Lavaux wird begrenzt durch zwei Was-

serläufe (die Veveyse und die Lutrive) und

ist von vielen kleinen Bächen durchzogen.

Um die Bodenerosion zu vermeiden, wur-

den ausgeklügelte Systeme zum Auffangen

des Rieselwassers installiert.

In addition to being bordered by two water-

ways (the Veveyse and the Lutrive), Lavaux

is irrigated by numerous small streams. In

order to avoid soil erosion, systems were

established to enable the stream waters

to be collected.

chen mussten. Andererseits beherbergen

sie Elemente mit erhaltenswertem Erbgut.

Das Lavaux ist Heimat einiger äusserst sel-

tener Reptilienarten.

The flora and fauna have undeniably been

superseded by the vine. They nonetheless

contain elements of great heritage value

which need to be protected. Lavaux is

playing a notable role especially concerning

the rarity of certain species of reptiles.

The beauty of the Lavaux region is entirely

linked to the existence of the vines. The

future of the vineyards is protected by

ensuring that of the winemakers who culti-

vate the vines. A bottle of wine bought at

the correct price contributes directly to the

upkeep of this area.

Dank seiner

Oberflächengestaltung und der Ausrich-

tung nach Südwesten ist es grösstenteils

vor Nordwind geschützt und profitiert von

einer optimalen Sonneneinstrahlung.

Lavaux enjoys a climate suitable for culti-

vating vines. Thanks to its terrain and

south-west orientation, Lavaux is partly

protected from the northerly winds and

benefits from a great deal of sun exposure.

hat.

Lavaux’s sub-soil is formed from a fresh

water molasse, comprised of alternating

soft layers and bedrock, upon which the

Rhone glacier left its moraines when it

retreated.

L’empreinte du vignoble en terrasses est

imprimée sur l’ensemble du secteur socio-

culturel de Lavaux. De l’architecture aux

améliorations foncières en passant par

l’éthnographie et la toponymie, le déve-

l’intelligence et le savoir-faire de ses

habitants. Un domaine toujours en évolution

Die Rebstockterrassen haben dem ge-

der Architektur bis zu Verbesserungen

bei der Bodennutzung, über Ethnographie

The stamp of the vineyard terraces is

Mauern, Terrassen, Kommunikationswegen

und Dörfern besteht, kulturelles Erbe eines

ungewöhnlichen und verschiedenartigen

Reichtums.

From a natural landscape, the monks and

then the winemakers created a cultural

landscape, made up essentially of walls,

terraces, communication routes and vil-

lages, a patrimony of exceptional richness

and variation.

It seems that the region of Lavaux came

into being during the Carolingian era. The

oldest Latin description “vallem de Lus-

triaco”, meaning “Lutry administrative

region” or “Valley of Lutry”, dates back to

1139.

romaine. Ensuite, les voies routières,

lacustres et ferroviaires vont connaître un

développement majeur au courant du XIXe

siècle et au début du XXe siècle.

Der erste befahrbare Weg am Nordufer

des Genfersees stammt aus der Römerzeit.

Strassen, Wasserwege und Eisenbahn

kommen im 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahr-

hunderts dazu.

The first carriageway ran along the north

shore of Lake Geneva and dates back to

the Roman era. Then major road, lake and

railway developments were done during

the 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Le remaniement parcellaire a permis de di-

minuer considérablement le morcellement

de la propriété foncière. D’autres travaux

importants ont été entrepris ponctuellement

pour consolider des falaises rocheuses

situées dans la moitié est du site.

Die Güterzusammenlegung hat zu einer

erheblichen Verminderung der Zerstücke-

lung von Grundeigentum geführt. Recht-

zeitig wurde auch das Notwendige zur

Befestigung der Felsabstürze im östlichen

Teil des Gebiets unternommen.

Land registration revision led to a consi-

derable reduction in the dividing of indivi-

dual properties. Other important work was

quickly undertaken to consolidate the rocky

cliff faces situated in the eastern part of

the region.

Malgré les deux pôles urbains de Lausanne

et Vevey-Montreux, cette région a su néan-

moins préserver son caractère typiquement

viticole.

typischen Winzercharakter erhalten. Mit

dem Bundesgesetz über die Raumplanung

von 1979 konnte zum Glück auch der

grosse Druck in Bezug auf Bauland ein-

gedämmt werden.

Despite the two urban centres of Lausanne

and Vevey-Montreux, the area has none-

theless preserved its typically viticultural

character. Strong pressure to build in the

area was curbed thanks to the 1979 law

regarding the protection of Lavaux.

A Lavaux, l’architecture dit beaucoup :

si les maisons étroites des vignerons se

serrent en villages, les cossus édifices des

grands domaines s’en détachent et trônent

parmi les ceps.

Im Lavaux ist die Architektur sehr aus-

sagekräftig: die engen Häuser der Winzer

drücken sich in den Dörfern aneinander,

während die stattlichen Gebäude grosser

Weingüter sich deutlich davon abheben

und zwischen den Rebstöcken thronen.

In Lavaux, the architecture speaks vo-

lumes: the winemakers’ narrow houses are

bunched together to form villages, whereas

the luxurious buildings of the large estates

stand out and take pride of place among

the vines.

Kulturerbes konsequenterweise rasch ent-

wickelt. Die Region (besonders die Städte

Montreux-Vevey und Lausanne) ist es

gewöhnt, internationale Gäste zu emp-

fangen. Diese wird durch den Reichtum

des Lavaux erweitert, zur grossen Freude

der Gäste.

After having read this brochure, it is obvious

that tourism in this living cultural heritage is

growing as a consequence. It is a region

used to welcoming international guests

in the different surrounding destinations

(Montreux-Vevey and Lausanne). The latter

is reinforced by the features of Lavaux, to

the great delight and pleasure of its visitors.

nocturnes. Montreux, ville de musique ;

Montreux Comedy Festival, Montreux Volley

Masters, Montreux Noël, ... Il se passe

toujours quelque chose à Montreux Riviera.

Zwischen See und Bergen gelegen bietet

die Montreux Riviera gleichzeitig die Vor-

teile einer friedlichen und sicheren Region,

ideal für einen Familienaufenthalt, sowie

einen wunderschönen Rahmen für Spa-

ziergänge und Wanderungen. Es gibt eine

grosse Palette an Freizeitaktivitäten, Kultur,

Parallel

zu den grösseren Musikevents wie das

berühmte Montreux Jazz Festival oder das

sehr renommierte September Musical, gibt

es ein schier unerschöpfliches Angebot

an Vergnügungen zu jeder Zeit: Montreux

Comedy Festival, Montreux Volley Masters,

Montreux Noël (Weihnachtsmarkt) ... Es ist

immer etwas los an der Montreux Riviera.

Nestling between the lake and mountains,

Montreux Riviera simultaneously offers the

advantages of a peaceful and safe region,

ideal for a family holiday, as well as a

magnificent setting, suitable for walks,

but also a fantastic variety of day and

night-time leisure, cultural or sports acti-

vities. Montreux, city of music; Vevey,

city of images... the eastern region is also

reputed for the numerous festivals and

international events which take place there.

In parallel to the major music events,

such as the famous Montreux Jazz Festival

or the very well-known “Septembre Musi-

cal” event, there is a wide array of other

entertainment options throughout the year:

Montreux Comedy Festival, Montreux

Volley Masters, Montreux Noël (Christmas

Market)... There is always something

happening on the Montreux Riviera.

Menschen gestaltetes Gebiet. Hier ist auch

Raum für die verschiedensten Aktivitäten

im Überfluss. Abgesehen von Ereignissen

von nationalem Ausmass wie das Cully Jazz

Festival, gibt es jedes Jahr viele andere

Wein- und Dorfveranstaltungen im Lavaux;

erwähnenswert u.a. sind Epesses Nouveau

Nordic Walking. Hier wird alles dafür getan,

dass man die charmante Gegend wirklich

kennenlernen kann: vom kleinen Touris-

tenzug, der durch die Weinberge zuckelt

bis zum historischen Schiff der CGN auf

dem Genfersee. Eine wunderbare Gelegen-

heit zum Entdecken und Degustieren der

Lavaux Weine ist das Lavaux Vinorama mit

einem fast unerschöpflichen Angebot an

Winzerprodukten. Und wenn die Authentizität

eines Weinkellers sie mehr reizt, warum

nicht zur Degustation bei einem Winzer

direkt vorbeigehen.

Lavaux is much more than land shaped

by its people, it is also an area offering an

abundance of varied activities. Besides the

national-scale events such as the Cully

Jazz Festival, other winemaking and village

events take place each year in Lavaux;

for example, “l’Epesses nouveau en fête”

(New Epesses Festival), the Cully Classic

or Lavaux Nordic Walking, to name but a

few. Here, everything has been done to

explore this enchanting region: from the

small tourist train which criss-crosses

the vineyards paths, to the historical CGN

(General Navigation Company) boats sailing

across the Lake of Geneva. The high point

in the discovery and tasting of Lavaux wines,

the Lavaux Vinorama presents an almost

endless wine selection. If the authenticity of

a vintner’s cellar is more appealing to you,

why not experience a tasting directly at a

local winemaker’s.
