Depuis qu'il a commencé à écrire, en 1935, il ne se passe pas une année sans que Northrop Frye ne publie plusieurs articles, qui seront ensuite, pour les plus importants, rassemblés en volumes. L'ouvrage de Robert Denham, Northrop Frye, An Annotated Bibliography of Primary and Secondary Sources 1 enregistre à la date de 1987 quelque deux cent quatre-vingt textes. C'est dire la difficulté que représente la tâche de fournir une bibliographie, même sélective, dans le cadre limité d'un article. Aussi n'analyserons-nous ici que ses livres, qui représentent à eux tous la totalité de sa pensée critique et les ressorts de sa méthode. Nous donnerons aussi les références de certains articles importants, sans retenir ceux qui sont repris dans des ouvrages. Enfin nous apporterons une attention particulière au petit nombre des traductions en langue française.

Il faut ajouter que l'importance quantitative de cette œuvre appelle, corrélativement, un nombre considérable de sources secondaires2, parmi lesquelles nous ne retiendrons que les plus importantes ainsi que les références en français.

Livres

Au nombre de vingt-six, les livres de Northrop Frye jalonnent la seconde moitié du vingtième siècle - depuis la parution de Fearful Symmetry en 1947 jusqu'à celle de The Double Vision en 1991 - avec constance et régularité. Ils sont composés le plus souvent à partir de la reprise d'articles ou de conférences regroupés autour d'une même idée, d'un même auteur ou d'un même thème.

Etude sur Blake qui porte principalement sur les textes prophétiques du poète ( Milton , Jérusalem , Le Mariage du ciel et de l'enfer ), qui explore la complexité du système blakien et qui cherche à le situer au sein de la tradition.

1957, Northrop Frye, Anatomy of Criticism , Four Essays, Prince- ton, NJ, Princeton University Press. C'est l'ouvrage qui a fait connaître Frye. En quatre grands essais, il dresse un tableau des théorèmes critiques capables d'embrasser tout
