    A CHAMPIONOF CIVIL RIGHTSMichael has devoted much of his life to fighting forcivil rights. He has been a participant in Northampton 'sPride March since 1984, led anti-bullying initiatives asan educator, fought for working people, and sponsoredthe City Council's Living Wage Resolution andResolution to Defend the Bill of Rights. He formed theNorthampton Human Rights Commission.A COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERMichael has devoted his time and energy to a varietyof causes and efforts in Northampton . Currently, heserves as organizational coordinator for the DementiaInitiative, a community program that connects peoplewith dementia and their caregivers with needed services.He also serves as a mentor at the Hampshire CountyJail and House of Correction, working to help inmatesacquire skills that will help them become successfulcitizens after their release.AN ENVIRONMENTALISTAs a City Council member, Michael worked oninitiatives aimed at increasing Northampton's recyclingrate and promoted energy efficiency in city departments.He opposed expansion of the Northampton landfill overan aquifer and was a leader in the effort to put a landfillquestion before voters in 2010. Michael has also earneda certification in per maculture.A STRONG VOICEFOR TRANSPARENCYAND INCLUSIONAs a member and president of the Northampton CityCouncil, Michael fought to ensure that all residentswould have a voice in city government and thatdecision-making would be transpa rent. He continuesto believe that Northampton can only become a betterplace to live if government's ears are open to all voices.

    Northampton is a great city full of gre at people. It'sour town -everyone 's. And all of us- natives andnewcomers; Cooley Dickinson nurses, academics,downtown merchants and downtown waitstaff,white collar, blue collar, no collar; from Fair Street toChesterfield Road - deserve a mayor who will hear ourvoices, involve us in decision-making, use our tax dollarswisely, and help keep our city strong and vibrant.MICHAEL BARDSLEYWILL BE THAT MAYOR.MichaelBardsley is:AN ESTABLISHED LEADERMichael was a member of the Northampton CityCouncil for 16 years. He served as president of thecouncil for eight years. He has a long track record ofservice to the city and as an advocate for transparencyin city government.

    A VETERAN PUBLICMANAGERMichael spent more than 30 years as a teacher,guidance counselor, department chair andadministrator in the Amhers t public schools.He has developed and administered budgets andmanaged public employees. He possesses a deepunderstanding of the challenges and opportunitiesfacing our public schools.A BELIEVER INOUR SCHOOLSAs a retired teacher, guidance counselor and schooladministrator, Michael possesses a deep understandingof the challenges and opportunities facing our publicschools. He has the experience and the skills to leadthe School Committee and maintain a strong, vibrantpublic education system in Northampton .A LABOR LEADERMichael was president of the Amherst-PelhamTeachers Association for 10 years and served on theBoard of Directors for the Massachusetts TeachersAssociation. He knows what it's like to work for aliving and he believes in honoring and protectingcollective bargaining rights.

    In his career as an educator, Michael: Developed and administered budgets. Worked as a member of a management team. Evaluated employees, showing appreciation for thosedoing a good job, supporting those who needed

    professional growth, and holding accountable thosenot fulfilling thei r responsibilities.

    Made hiring and firing decisions. Communica ted effectively within a complex organization. Developed and implemented new programs. Led crisis teams during emergency situations. Participated in contract negotiations. Evaluated systems and determined what needed to

    change when they were not functioning effectivelyAs Northampton's next mayor, Michael will bring thatexperience, his experience in city government, and hisbelief in openness to fulfilling a list of objectives including:

    Reforming the budgeting process to keep cityservices strong while promoting responsible use oftaxpayers' dollars .

    Launching a program encouraging public andprivate organizations to hire local employees anduse local services.

    Strengthening the city's economic developmentprogram to make Northampton a community in whichworking people can continue to live affordably.

    Diversifying and increasing the city's revenue stream. Improving the climate within City Hall to ensure that

    local government is accessible to ever y resident. Addressing ongoing issues that have led to a decrease

    in employee morale. Protecting the city's natural resources through

    increased efforts to reduce our solid waste disposal viaenhanced recycling, increasing our use of renewableenergy, and ending practices that could put our watersupply at risk.

    Leading continued improvement of the quality ofeducation we offer our children, especially withi n ourelementary schools.

    Initiating a discussion about term limits for themayor's office.

    Northampton is a great city because of the contributionsof everyone who lives here.
