the struggle to enter this life of intellectual pleasures, in spite of temp- tations and police persecutions.

Tasker's story is the finest of the lot. It differs from the others in more than one respect. It is not the story of a professional and it is written in prison where the author is still confined for a long term. With the artist's feeling for the dramatic, he gives his reaction to the prison and its life out of which is born in him, at least, a new personality which demands self-expression.

The penologist and the legislator will find much to ponder over in these volumes in which the desires, hopes, and feelings of the so-called "underworld" have become articulate.

Cours de Droit Criminal Français. Tome I. Droit Pénal. By 7. A. Roux. 2nd ed. 540 pp. Recueil Sirey. Paris, 1927.

This is a textbook on. French Criminal Law, the author occupying the chair of Criminal Law in the University of Strassburg. After a brief introduction on the problems of criminality following largely Ferri's Criminal Sociology, the author takes up in a first part the penal law, considering its sources, its extent in time and space, or a.s we would say jurisdiction, and its interpretation. In the second part he considers the ways in which the law is violated, that is to say, the definition of various crimes. Part three deals with the criminal and treats the question of responsibility including the circumstances which excuse or justify the doing of acts which would otherwise be crim- inal, and also extenuating and aggravating circumstances. The prob- lem of recidivism is discussed under this division. The fourth part deals with punishment and preventative measures. The basic theories are discussed and the different methods of punishment described. Finally preventative measures such as juvenile courts, probation, pa- role and the rehabilitation of the criminal are considered. The book is comprehensive though concise in setting forth both the present state of the law and the theories which have gained most currency as to the various phases of crime and its ounishment.
