«The heavy industry that is the cornerstone of Lyon’s present-day prosperity is essentially out of sight in a “chemical corridor” to the south of the centre. The city is also having some success in attracting new business clusters such as renewable energies and even the video games industry.»

«In the past year, 30 companies, including Japan’s Toshiba Corp. (6502), the U.S.’s Baxter International and China’s Huawei Technologies Services Co. opened branches in the Lyon area, according to Agence pour le Developpement Economique de la Region Lyonnaise, or Aderly, the local development body. The investment may create 1,345 jobs in three years, it said.»

Somehow, I doubted the Virgin Mary would approve. Quite a crowd had gathered outside the Gothic Saint-Nizier church in Lyon. Everyone watched, quietly transfixed, as the 19th-century façade underwent some mind-bending transformations. Jungle creepers took root then wilted in its dark brickwork; doves burst out then fluttered around; and neon grid lines zapped around the portico. Then flames burst up the stone, licking the church clock. In a dazzling, disconcerting finale, the entire building collapsed then reassembled into the shape of the neighbouring blocks of flats. This was, of course, visual trickery, one of a series of captivating light shows that takes over the city for a few days in December – although perhaps not quite what the festival’s originators had in mind. Both the electronic sleight of hand, and the battering – albeit virtual – of the church exterior, would surely have been beyond the most surreal dreams of the mid-19th-century Lyonnais faithful who had founded the Fête des Lumières.

It happened in December 1852, when the city’s staunchly Catholic community was awaiting the inauguration of a golden statue of the Virgin Mary on Fourvière, the hill that looms over Lyon. She was already fashionably late. Designed by the Lyonnais sculptor Joseph-Hugues Fabisch, the statue was due to be unveiled in September. But a few weeks before, the swollen waters of the River Saône had flooded Fabisch’s workshop, forcing a postponement until December 8.On the eve of that date, Lyon was again swept by storms and the organisers cancelled hastily. Prematurely, as it turned out, for the weather on the day proved calm and the populace started to whisper their discontent. As darkness fell, they lit candles and placed them on their windowsills in stained-glass holders, a gesture that spread around the city. Then, according to the legend, citizens descended onto the streets and celebrated anyway. Then church leaders spontaneously lit up the chapel on the hill, and a festival was born.

«But whatever the installations are, expect the festival to consume the whole city once night falls. Its main spaces, from Place des Terreaux and its fine arts museum to the river bridges, and smaller-scale suburban locations, will be given flamboyant, technicoloured makeovers with the latest in light technology, often creating eerie, memorable effects.»

The candles in stained glass remain: their light flickers on the shutters of the town’s handsome apartment blocks for the duration of the festival. But the Fête des Lumières is now about much more than illuminated windowsills; for four days the whole city now becomes a canvas. After nightfall there are tricks of the light everywhere, with visitors wandering around more than 80 installations all over Lyon. It’s a recent evolution. Until 1999, the festival was only celebrated on that same day, December 8. Perhaps realising the untapped tourist potential of the tradition as well as the fresh technological possibilities, the city authorities extended the celebration to four days. It now attracts millions of visitors each year. The festival now vies with Lyon’s famed gastronomy as one of the city’s biggest draws, although it is still yet to register quite as much among Britons.Given the billowing scale, it is perhaps no surprise that the festival’s traditional roots are occasionally overshadowed or tinkered with. I spoke to Milosh Luczynski, one of the artistic collaborators at the Saint-Nizier church, an engaging Polish atheist who made no attempt to conceal his delight at putting a cheeky burst of flames into the light show. It would probably have never found favour among those who first put candles on their windowsills in 1852, but nobody present showed any sign of disapproval.

Much more detail on the specific installations would be slightly futile; they can change dramatically each year (this year’s theme is the history of light). Online clips will give a better flavour of what to expect than any words. But whatever the installations are, expect the festival to consume the whole city once night falls. Its main spaces, from Place des Terreaux

and its fine arts museum to the river bridges, and smaller-scale suburban locations, will be given flamboyant, technicoloured makeovers with the latest in light technology, often creating eerie, memorable effects.Despite the crowds, the festival is a restrained, child-friendly event. As shows now run over several days, the number of people is rarely overbearing; the density is highest at the opening ceremony in Place Bellecour. In the relative calm of day, take a little time to wander Lyon, if only as a reminder of how impressive the city is, even without technological aids. At the confluence of two grand rivers, the Saône and the Rhône, it was settled by the Romans, who came, saw, conquered, and left quite a few traces. Since then the city has also acquired grand Neoclassical architecture, Gothic churches and beguiling traboules (the city’s ancient narrow passageways that still feel like a secret when you see them today) since. Those shaping their art to these different spaces for the festival are a diverse bunch, both in nationality and skills. The space-age pyrotechnics require a nebulous mix of architectural knowledge, computer wizardry, a flair for choreography and DJing know-how. If the language occasionally strays into the pretentious – «intermedia-artist» was a personal favourite of the job titles I came across – you cannot fault the sheer, bewitching inventiveness with which they put on a show.It is a trait reminiscent of two previous Lyonnais trailblazers, the Lumière brothers. The pioneering virtuosos of cinema are now celebrated in an excellent museum in their old family home (see below). Despite the surname, the link between them and the festival is pure serendipity, but the special effects in Lyon each December seem a natural legacy. Already spectacular, as each year passes the lights of Lyon are only likely to get brighter, with more dazzle than the founders could have dreamed of, and denser (more secular) crowds than they could ever have imagined. Whatever higher powers might make of it from Fourvière hill or beyond, the people certainly approve.
