    E v e r y A u g u s t w e c l e a n t h ehummingbird feeders, fill them withsweet, tempting liquid and hang themnear a window so we can watch the

tiny little birds who stop to feed on their way to Mexicoor South America. This year they seemed to especiallyappreciate what we had to offer, as we had more hungryvisitors than in years past. We never got tired ofwatching them as they would come zooming in to the red

feeding stations, stick their needle-like beaks into theopenings and drink their fill, all the while fluttering theirwings into a blur. As before, we noticed that, tiny as theyare, they are very fierce and territorial, chasing awayothers of their kind who want to dine at the same feeder. Then we saw that as the weeks went by, they seemed tosense the shortness of time and became less selfish, sothat we observed three or four sharing the same feeder. The most amazing thing we saw was during Lili when oneor two of the little birds braved the hurricane winds andrain, and defying all logic, came back for nourishment atthe one sure source they knew. During the storm, we sat inside without electricity orrunning water and watched shingles blow off our roof andlimbs break off trees. Ive been through one tornado, many typhoons, and several hurricanes, so I wasntafraid, but certainly was impressed again with whathappens when the powers of nature are unleashed. Likeour governor and so many others, I also gave credit toGod for exerting His power at a crucial time and savingour area from worse destruction.

Soon after the storm had abated, I received a callasking me to help at the Red Cross center as a mentalhealth worker. For the next ten days or so I spent part orall of the days listening to stories of people who had lostalmost everything. Trees fell in on their houses, clothesand bedding were soaked and mildewed, food wasspoiled. They stood in long lines for hours to ask forvouchers for diapers, school uniforms, and food. Most ofthem had been needy before Lili, and their faces told oftheir desperation as they struggled to find a bridgebetween their loss and a new beginning. Over and over asI sat with them and heard their needs and concerns, I

noticed that their list ended with, But thank God, werestill alive, or Thank God, He protected us. Many ofthese dear people said to me quietly, Ive been throughhard times before. God will see me through this too.During and after a storm of any kind, we need to bravethe winds of discouragement and find hope andsustenance in the one sure Source we know.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children

    of God. Matthew 5:9

Omar Bradley, the last surviving World War II vestar general, in an Armistice Day speech onNovember 11,1948 said, We have men of science, too few men of God. We have grasped the mystery

of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. The world has achieved brilliance withoutconscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants andethical infants. We know more about war than weknow about peace, more about killing than weknow about living . If we continue to develop ourtechnology without wisdom or prudence, ourservant may prove to be our executioner.

If there was ever a day we need to reject the atomand return to the Sermon on the Mount, it is today.Fighting and killing has become as common as thecell phone. Human life in many areas of our worldis insignicant. Our knowledge about war aboundsat the cost of peace. From Ferguson, MO to theGaza Strip, in between and beyond, peace has allbut become an illusion.

Jesus is calling for HIS followers to bepeacemakers. Note: Jesus calls us to be peace-makers, not just peacekeepers. Wiersbesexpository outlines on the New Testament says,Christians should bring peace, between peopleand God and between those who are at odds witheach other. We share the Gospel of peace.Someone wisely observed, Know God, Knowpeace. No God, No peace. When a personsurrenders their life to Jesus, the Prince of Peaceenters and changes the way we view life and thelives of others. Much of what the Christian iswitnessing today is a world trying to live without the

living God. Praise God for the peacemakers.Jesus said, (John 14:27) Peace I leave with you;my peace I give you. I do not give to you as theworld gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled anddo not be afraid. As our biological genes give us aphysical resemblance to our earthly parents, ouractions as peacemakers will make us known as children of God.
