The German Presence in the Lanaudière and Mauricie Regions of Trois-Rivières

Ancient counties of Hampshire, Leinster, Warwick

Modern day counties of

Berthier, Joliette, L’Assomption, Maskinongé, Montcalm, Nicolet, St-Maurice

The settlement of Germanic soldiers to the above regions began approximately in 1776

when Germanic soldiers were housed among French Canadian families, up to three or

four soldiers per household. From 1784, some of these Germanic soldiers followed the

Loyalists to Upper Canada, while others stayed and married into Catholic and Protestant

families.

To this day, one can find traces of Germanic family lineages within the above regions.

Some originated from Alsace, Baden., Bayern, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen,

Burgenland, Gelderland, Glarus, Graubunden, Hamburg, Hessen (Hesse), Karnten,

Lubuskie, Luxembourg, Limburg, Luzern, Mecklenburg, Moselle, Niederösterreich,

Niedersachsen, Nordrhein, Oberösterreich, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Saschen,

Sachsen-Anhalt, Salzburg, Sankt Gallen, Schleswig-Holstein, Steiermark,

Thuringen Vorarlberg, Vorpommern, Westfalen, Wien (Vienna), Württemberg.

Berthier County An old county under the French Regime located between Maskinongé and Joliette counties on the northern shores of the St. Lawrence River - Governor Frederick Haldimand had selected the region of Berthier and nearby Maskinongé as a staging region for incoming Loyalists to Lower Canada - Hamlets such as Machiche (Yamachiche), Louiseville, Brandon (St-Gabriel-de-Brandon), Berthier-en-haut, Maskinongé were settled in part by Loyalists http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=C&SS=8

Champlain County An old county of the 1670s located west of Portneuf county, east of St-Maurice county and the city of Trois-Rivières. http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=C&SS=12

Leinster County A large territory and county established prior to 1792 with those of Effingham and York, which formed the Laurentian region – Leinster was located between the counties of Warwick to the east and Effingham to the west, all of the above were located north of Montréal. http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=R&SS=14 http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=R&SS=15

Maskinongé County A narrow county located between Saint-Maurice County and Berthier County - The region of Maskinongé had a deep relationship with the United Empire Loyalists (UEL) of the late 1780s and early 1790s - Governor Frédérick Haldimand had selected this county as a refuge for UEL families - Most stayed only a few years but a few families would establish residence within the county - The majority of Protestant Missionaries who served in Maskinongé County were based at churches located in Trois-Rivières, so it stands to reason that early church records of families of Maskinongé are mostly found among the church registers of Trois-Rivières http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=C&SS=35

Nicolet County Located just across the St. Lawrence River from Trois-Rivières - The Anglican Parishes from Trois-Rivières and Nicolet were associated since the mid-1760s onwards. The city of Nicolet being its capital http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=C&SS=45

St-Maurice County A narrow county between Champlain County to the east and Maskinongé County to the west. The city of Trois-Rivières being its centre of regional government and business sectors. http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=C&SS=64

Warwick County A 1791 county located between St-Maurice County and Leinster County - The towns of Berthier and Berthierville were actually located within Warwick County http://www.leslabelle.com/Cimetieres/ListerCims.asp?MP=E3&TY=R&SS=14
