Press Release
The European Union of Private Hospitals elects new president
and proclaims «more Europe in Health»
The European Union of Private Hospitals (UEHP) has a new President. Mr. Teofilo Leite was
unanimously elected, during the General Assembly which was held in Berlin with the support
of the German association, Bundesverband Deutscher Privatkliniken e.V (BDPK), whose
president is Dr. Katharina Nebel. Mr. Teofilo Leite, who is the president of the Portuguese
Association of Private Hospitals, succeeds Dr. Max Ponseillé who held the position for 6
years.
«More Europe in health to have more health in Europe» is the motto of the two year mandate.
«In Europe there must be a Union in Health as much as a European Union. We need more
common policies on health, more freedom of choice which will induce more quality and
efficiency, more uniform criteria in assessing quality, more ICT and e-health, more health
professionals», he explains, confirming that, as presented at the first European Congress of
Private Hospitals, held in Paris, in May 2010, Europe increasingly needs private hospitals.
Among its priorities, the UEHP points out the directive on cross-border healthcare, adopted
on January 19th by the European Parliament. «The mobility of patients is a matter to which
we have actively contributed since the beginning and in which we will continue to
participate with commitment especially regarding the introduction of common best
practices for quality and patient safety, but also regarding the construction of the European
network of patient referral», explains Mr. Leite.
UEHP is also particularly concerned with competition law and European national financing
for hospital services, according to the European rules. «Its control by the European
Commission is essential to avoid possible distortions of competition», argues the new
president.
