A note from our DeanUW-Waukesha supports life-long learning for all residents of Waukesha County and the surrounding areas. As many of you know, learning can look different for everyone. For some, it may be attending a college-credit course on campus or at one of our off-site programs. Others may continue to enhance their skills in technology,

language, or the arts in one of our many non-credit enrichment programs offered on campus. Still others may

engage in credit or non-credit learning opportunities online or expand their horizons by traveling around the world. Students of all ages can find something that interests them at UW-Waukesha, and our Continuing Education offerings make up a large portion of those options.

I believe the importance of continued learning transcends the accumulation of college credits and degrees. If it’s been awhile since you’ve tried something new, I encourage you to try one of the classes or trips listed in this catalog, and restart your journey towards life-long learning. It’s a journey I’ve been taking for over 60 years, and I never intend to stop.

Former Student Spreads Her Wings at Wildlife in Need Center

Mandy Feavel, who attended UW-Waukesha from 2004 to 2006, serves as the animal care manager at the Wildlife in Need Center (WINC). A Waukesha native, she attended Waukesha West High School before coming to UW-Waukesha. She earned her bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology from UW-Madison in 2008 and afterward participated in a summer internship with the

Wisconsin Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. In 2009, she accepted a full-time job at WINC as a wildlife rehabilitator before being promoted to her current position last fall.

Mandy talked to us recently about her time at UW-Waukesha and her life since.

Why did you pick UW-Waukesha?Part of the reason I attended UW-Waukesha was because I was asked to participate in the UW-Madison Connections program. I also chose UW-Waukesha because it was close to home. I stayed with my parents for my first two years of college, which was a very smart choice economically. I also really liked that I was able to take my general education classes at UW-Waukesha, so when I continued my education at UW-Madison I took classes that were focused specifically on my major, wildlife ecology. That made my experience in my major even better and helped me enjoy my major more.

What do you remember about your time here? Are there specific experiences or people who stand out when you look back? Two different things stick out to me about my time at UW-Waukesha, being on the women’s volleyball team and being a UW-Waukesha student ambassador. Both of these opportunities gave me a chance to meet new people and really feel like I was a part of the school. I made life-long friends from being involved in what I could. I helped give tours and orientations to new students which taught me a lot about the school itself and also helped me meet lots of people!

In what ways do you think UW-Waukesha has prepared you for your career?UW-Waukesha prepared me for my position of Animal Care Manager by helping me learn and improve on my time management skills. It also prepared me for my transition to UW-Madison. There seems to be a perception that community colleges or two year colleges aren’t as difficult as four year universities, I found that to not be true. UW-Waukesha was challenging, as college should be. Classes were just as hard at UW-Waukesha as they were at UW-Madison.

Any advice that helped you over the years that you would pass on to UW-Waukesha students?Get involved while you’re in college. It helps you get comfortable with your surroundings, you meet new people and use a planner! Being organized really helps keep me on track. Time management is something to learn for yourself as you work through your years in college. Don’t necessarily follow what your peers are doing for time managing; learn what works best for you and what will make you successful in school.

What about UW-Waukesha makes it special in your mind?I enjoyed going to a smaller college to start. I am someone who learns in a classroom environment that is smaller and more intimate. I loved that all my professors were very approachable and could give me the guidance I needed. I also felt that all the staff at UW-Waukesha was extremely friendly and helpful through my entire time there.

Any other thoughts?I am really proud of my years at UW-Waukesha and I’m glad I attended UW-Waukesha for my first two years. I’m still involved when I can be, since I am still working close to UW-Waukesha. I have come to biology classes to teach them about the Wildlife In Need Center, which is located on UW-Waukesha’s Field Station property, and offer internship opportunities to current students.
