Early years

• Born in Pender, Nebraska, 1894• Welsh and Irish lineage• Oldest of seven children• Went to Princeton University• There, worked on undergraduate Red Cross

Committee• Worked for a bank until finally being

persuaded to work with Herbert Hoover

Later years and death

• Died suddenly of cardiac arrest in Manhattan, 1965

• Left UNICEF with more than 550 long-term programs and helped more than 55 million children in 116 countries.

• Worked with Herbert Hoover in Commission for Polish Relief

• Became director of American Red Cross• Conducted food surveys with Herbert Hoover

in 38 countries for 76 days.

UNICEF• Founded UNICEF with Hoover• Aimed to help children of “ex-enemy countries” combat famine• Consulted secretariats of FAO, WHO to aid governments in

programmes complementing milk distribution and the search for other manufactured protein sources

• Conducted nutrition surveys• Conducted training for personnel to carry out programmes

alleviating famines in developing countries.• Encouraged milk consumption and found ways to solve the

problems of milk handling in tropical countries by distributing:– Buffalo milk– Milk of vegetable origin
